On a vermeil Tank this is the assessment that matters most, because the case is sterling silver carrying 20 microns of 18 carat gold rather than solid metal, and it ages by thinning rather than by scratching. The two places the gold always goes first are the outer edges of the brancards, the parallel bars running the full height of the case, and the corners of the case back, both of which take the constant contact of a shirt cuff. On this example the gilding remains continuous across both, with no break through to the silver beneath. The marks present are superficial handling marks in the flat surfaces, of the kind that thirty years of ordinary wear will put on any small dress watch, and they read as age rather than damage.

The case back retains its stamps, ARGENT, 925 and the plaque or G 20 microns mark, alongside the reference and serial. These are shallow punches by nature and are the first thing lost to overpolishing, so their presence is a useful indication that the case has not been worked hard in the past. The blue cabochon in the crown, synthetic spinel on the Must line rather than the sapphire used on the precious metal Tanks, is intact and correctly seated, and the crown pulls and turns cleanly through its positions. The bracelet is in good condition, secure at both lug ends with no play at the spring bars, and the buckle closes positively.

Dial & Hands

The dial and hands are in good condition. This is the classic Must arrangement, painted Roman numerals on a cream ground with a railway minute track running the perimeter, and because the numerals are printed rather than applied the dial is completely flat, which means any lifting, flaking or foxing would be immediately obvious. There is none. The printing is crisp, the track is unbroken, and the ground is even in tone with no water staining or discolouration at the edges. The blued sword hands are straight, correctly shaped and free of corrosion, and they sit at the proper heights with no fouling against one another or the crystal. The secret signature is present in the stroke of the VII, the Cartier anti counterfeiting mark that was standard across the range by the 1990s, and it is legible under a loupe.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0900/8670/3383/files/0cartier-must-tank-vermeil-must-de-cartier-1990s-1.jpg?v=1787394159
