The first Submariner's assigned reference number was either 6204 or 6205 — it is unclear which model came first, and in any event the two watches are nearly identical. Based on serial number evidence, the broad consensus places the ref 6204 as the first to reach market, before both it and the ref 6205 were formally presented at Basel the following year.
Neither the 6204 nor the 6205 had the distinctive Mercedes hands later so strongly associated with the Submariner line. Both of these early references instead carried straight pencil-style hands. What sets the two references apart is the nature of the crown itself: while the initial 6204 came with a standard 5.3mm crown, the 6205 was equipped with an upgraded 6mm Twinlock crown. The 6205 also introduced the Mercedes hand to the Submariner, though not all examples carried it — original pencil hands on the 6205 do exist.

The ref 6536 itself was a transitional reference produced in very small numbers for approximately one year in 1955, while the ref 6536-1 that followed became the substantive production reference, remaining in production until 1959.
The first series of the 6536-1 produced in 1955 had a depth rating printed in red ink — a detail that has become known among those who study the reference as the Red Depth dial. The reference 5508 is the last of the Submariners to carry the 100m/330ft depth rating and also the last one without crown guards. It is known as the Small Crown to distinguish it from the Big Crown reference 6538.
Powering the 5508 is the calibre 1530 nickel-finished lever automatic movement, featuring 25 jewels and a monometallic compensation balance. The calibre 1530 represented an early example of Rolex in-house movement manufacture for the Submariner.
