Horns at Twelve: The Omega Seamaster Bullhead 146.011 and Why It Was Ahead of Its Time
To build the Seamaster Bullhead, Omega took a perfectly good chronograph movement and turned it ninety degrees, so the crown and both pushers came out of the top of the case like a pair of horns. The reference 146.011 of 1969 is what happens when a watchmaker designs around a racing driver's thumb instead of a shirt cuff. It sits higher at twelve than at six, reads like a stopwatch strapped to the wrist, and looks like nothing else Omega has ever put into series production. It was made for barely two years and then quietly dropped. More than half a century later, it is one of the most talked about Omegas of its era, and the reasons it failed are the same reasons it matters now.

Omega Before the Bullhead
The Bullhead makes more sense once you know how confident Omega was in 1969, and how quickly that confidence was about to be tested.
From La Chaux-de-Fonds to SSIH
Louis Brandt founded the business in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. By 1894 his sons had built an in-house system of manufacture in which components were made to be interchangeable, and the calibre that came out of it carried a name taken from the last letter of the Greek alphabet. The Omega calibre was so successful that in 1903 Louis Brandt and Frere renamed the whole company after it. In 1930 Omega merged with Tissot to form SSIH, and from 1932 it served as official timekeeper to the Olympic Games, a role it still holds. Timing, in other words, was part of the company's identity long before the Bullhead gave it a new shape.
The Seamaster name
The Bullhead was sold as a Seamaster, which says more about Omega's catalogue than about the watch. The Seamaster had been launched in 1948 for the company's centenary, conceived as a robust but elegant watch for active people, and by the late 1960s the name covered everything from dress watches to divers. A cushion cased driving chronograph fitted into that broad idea of a sporting Omega, even if it had nothing to do with the sea.
1969: The Year Everything Changed
1969 was a crowded year for watchmaking, and the Bullhead arrived in the middle of it.
The Moon and the mechanical chronograph
On 21 July 1969 the Omega Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the Moon, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the lunar surface. The same year Omega launched the Flightmaster for pilots and the Bullhead for drivers. Omega was at the height of its reputation as a chronograph maker, and it was confident enough to experiment with shapes and layouts that would have been unthinkable a decade earlier.
Quartz arrives
On 25 December 1969 Seiko introduced the Astron, the first quartz wristwatch. It was the beginning of what became known as the quartz crisis. Between 1970 and 1988, employment in the Swiss watch industry fell from around 90,000 to 28,000, and SSIH, Omega's parent group, was weakened badly enough by the recession of 1975 to 1980 that it had to be rescued by its banks in 1981. The Bullhead was designed in a world of mechanical certainty and launched into the first months of its collapse.
A Stopwatch Worn on the Wrist
The name comes from the silhouette. Seen from the front, the crown sits at the centre of the top edge with a chronograph pusher on either side of it, and the three together look like the head and horns of a bull.
Designed for drivers
Wound For Life describes the Bullhead as created with motor racing in mind, and Watchfinder records that it was developed for racing drivers, with the pushers moved to the top of the case to make them easier to operate at the wheel. The logic is borrowed from the stopwatch, which has always put its crown and buttons at the top so that it can be started and stopped with a thumb while held in the hand. On the wrist, the same layout lets a driver reach across and press a pusher without twisting the arm to find the side of the case. It is a sound idea on a race track. Off it, it asked the wearer to relearn where a watch's controls live.
A case that leans toward you
The case is as unusual as the layout. Wikipedia and Wound For Life both note that it is much thicker at the top than at the bottom, so the watch sits higher at twelve than at six and the dial tilts towards the wearer's eyes. Measurements vary between sources from around 41.5mm to 43mm across the cushion shaped steel case, and WatchBase records a height of 14.5mm. It was a large, heavy watch by the standards of 1969, and it looked it.
Colour and a rotating inner ring
The dial is pure late sixties. Wound For Life describes a light brown or chocolate dial, a chequered ring inside a rotating inner bezel, a minute register marked in blue, red and black segments, and bright orange hands for legibility at speed. Watchfinder describes a version with a glaring white dial and chequered chapter ring. Timeline.watch notes that the inner scale was offered in two forms, graduated 0 to 12 or 0 to 60, so the rotating ring could time either hours or minutes. The result is a dial that looks built for a rally stage rather than a boardroom.
Calibre 930: A Chronograph Turned on Its Side
Inside is the hand wound calibre 930, a member of the family that grew out of Omega's calibre 861.
The 861 family
Omega introduced the 861 in 1968, basing it on the Lemania 1873. Watch Wiki records a cam switched chronograph running at 21,600 vibrations per hour on 17 jewels, with a power reserve of about 40 hours. Cam switching was simpler and cheaper to produce than the column wheel of the older calibre 321, and the 861 went on to power the Speedmaster Professional for decades. Watch Wiki lists the 930 as a bullhead version of the family made from 1969 to 1970, and the Omega Forums archive description calls it a unique configuration of the 860 series movements.
Ninety degrees
The engineering trick behind the Bullhead is simple to describe. WatchBase notes that the calibre 930 is turned 90 degrees anticlockwise, so the winding stem and the chronograph controls, which normally exit at three o'clock, emerge at twelve. The registers move with it, which is why the 30 minute counter sits at twelve and the small seconds at six on the Bullhead, as Timeline.watch records, rather than at three and nine. Omega did not design a new movement for the watch. It reorganised the case and dial around an existing one, which is how a large company with a proven calibre could produce something this unconventional without starting from scratch.
Why the Bullhead Did Not Sell
The Bullhead was not a hit, and the reasons are not hard to find.
The wrong moment
Wikipedia is direct about the timing: quartz technology was taking off, and Omega already had a well established line of chronographs. A buyer walking into an Omega retailer in 1970 could choose a Speedmaster with the Moon landing behind it, a Flightmaster built for pilots, or a Seamaster chronograph in a conventional case. The Bullhead had to compete with its own siblings as well as with a new technology that promised far greater accuracy.
A watch for a narrow audience
The design that made it right for a racing driver made it awkward for almost everyone else. A crown at twelve sits where the wrist bends, the thick top edge made the watch sit high, and the cushion case was large for its time. Omega Forums' account of the modern revival describes the original as a novelty that never approached the popularity of the Speedmaster Professional. A watch built around one specific use case needs that use case to be widespread, and there were only ever so many people timing rally stages.
A short life
The result was a very short production run. Watch Wiki and WatchBase both give 1969 to 1970 for the calibre 930 Bullhead, and Wikipedia describes it as produced for one year only, in 1969. Timeline.watch notes that bullhead chronographs were made in relatively small numbers. Somlo documents an example made in 1970, which fits the longer of those ranges. Either way, Omega had moved on almost before the watch had reached the shops.
Why It Holds Up Now
The same qualities that held the Bullhead back in 1970 are what make it compelling today.
A design with no substitute
There is no other Omega that looks like this, and very little from any maker that does. The bullhead layout was taken up by other brands in the 1970s, Seiko among them, but the Omega was early, it was built on a respected chronograph calibre, and it carried the Omega name through its most celebrated year. Its short production run means relatively few were made, and its strong design means none of them can be mistaken for anything else.
Omega brought it back
The clearest sign of how the Bullhead is regarded now came from Omega itself. In 2013 the company revived it as the Seamaster Bullhead, fitted with the automatic Co-Axial calibre 3113 with a column wheel and vertical clutch, as SJX records. Three versions were made, a white dial with a 24 hour inner bezel, a silver rallye dial with a 60 minute bezel, and a black dial with a 12 hour bezel, each in 669 pieces. Omega Forums notes a fourth for the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 in 316 pieces. A company that once dropped the watch after a year or two chose to celebrate it four decades later, which says a great deal about how its reputation had changed.
A snapshot of a turning point
Above all, the Bullhead is a record of a particular moment. It was made by a Swiss company at the peak of its mechanical confidence, in the year its watch reached the Moon, just as quartz was about to upend the industry around it. It shows what Omega was willing to try when it believed mechanical chronographs would keep evolving indefinitely. Very few watches capture that moment as clearly.
Final Thoughts
What we love about the Bullhead is that it commits completely to one idea. Omega turned a movement on its side, thickened the top of the case, and put the controls where a driver's thumb would find them, because that was what a racing chronograph needed. The idea was sound, but the moment was wrong: the Speedmaster had just gone to the Moon, quartz was arriving, and most buyers wanted a chronograph that wore like a watch rather than a stopwatch. So the Bullhead disappeared almost as soon as it arrived. That short life is exactly why it stands out today. It remains one of the most unconventional chronographs Omega has put into production, and it captures, in one steel cushion case, the last confident experiment of the mechanical age before everything changed.
