TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph WBY1160.FT8085 ‘Monza’ 38mm
Introduction
Released in 2025 as a 1 of 1,000 limited edition, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph WBY1160.FT8085 is a contemporary reworking of one of the brand’s most historically important sports watch lines. This reference is immediately distinguished by its red composite case, green bidirectional rotating bezel, and green rubber strap, a colour-forward execution that directly references the original Formula 1 watches of the mid-1980s. While visually expressive, the watch remains grounded in function, pairing a rotating timing bezel with a solar-powered quartz movement designed for durability, accuracy, and everyday wear.
The Formula 1 Line and Its Origins
The Formula 1 collection was introduced in 1986, shortly after Techniques d’Avant Garde acquired Heuer and created TAG Heuer. It was the first watch launched under the new name and represented a decisive shift in direction. Rather than relying on traditional mechanical chronographs, TAG Heuer embraced quartz technology, composite materials, and bold colourways to create a watch that reflected the energy and accessibility of contemporary motorsport.
The original Formula 1 watches were constructed from fibreglass-reinforced plastic, featured rotating bezels, and were rated to 200 metres of water resistance. They were designed to be worn daily, in active environments, without concern. Bright cases, contrasting bezels, and rubber straps were not decorative decisions, but part of a broader philosophy that treated a sports watch as equipment rather than jewellery.
Evolution Toward the Solargraph
Over the decades, the Formula 1 line expanded and evolved. Steel cases replaced composites, sizes increased, and automatic movements were introduced alongside quartz. Despite these changes, the Formula 1 remained defined by clarity, robustness, and a strong connection to motorsport culture.
The Solargraph marks a deliberate return to the line’s foundational logic. Instead of increasing mechanical complexity, TAG Heuer focused on reducing friction in daily use. A solar-powered quartz movement removes the need for battery changes, while modern composite materials improve shock resistance and reduce weight. In this limited edition, the Solargraph also reintroduces the strong colour blocking that once defined the Formula 1 visually.
Case Construction and Proportions
The 38mm case is manufactured from a lightweight composite material and finished in red. This immediately recalls the early Formula 1 cases, updated through modern manufacturing techniques. The size is intentionally restrained, sitting close to historical Formula 1 proportions and offering balanced wear across a wide range of wrists.
The case profile is compact and functional, with matte surfaces that minimise glare and reinforce the watch’s tool-watch character. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, consistent with the Formula 1’s role as a versatile sports watch rather than a specialist dive instrument. The crown is proportionate and well protected, prioritising usability and durability over visual emphasis.
Green Bidirectional Rotating Bezel
The green bezel rotates bidirectionally, in keeping with the historical Formula 1 design language. This is an important distinction. Unlike professional dive watches that use unidirectional bezels for safety, the Formula 1 has always favoured bidirectional operation for quick, intuitive adjustment.
The bezel is marked with engraved minute indicators and numerals, allowing elapsed time to be referenced easily during everyday activities. Its function is straightforward and aligned with the watch’s sporting intent rather than formal dive specifications. The green finish contrasts sharply with the red case, creating a high-energy visual identity that directly echoes the expressive palettes of the original Formula 1 models.
Dial Layout and Legibility
Despite the bold external colours, the dial itself remains disciplined and highly legible. Large applied hour markers are filled with luminous material, providing strong contrast against the dial surface. The hands are broad and similarly lumed, ensuring immediate readability in varied lighting conditions.
Text is kept to a minimum and limited to essential branding and technical information. The date window is integrated cleanly without disrupting the balance of the dial. This restraint reflects the Formula 1 philosophy of prioritising function and clarity over decorative excess.
Luminous Performance
Luminous material is applied evenly across the hands and hour markers, delivering strong low-light visibility. The lume supports the watch’s role as an everyday sports companion rather than serving as a visual statement. Performance is consistent and practical, reinforcing legibility without overwhelming the dial design.
Solargraph Movement Technology
Powering the WBY1160.FT8085 is TAG Heuer’s Solargraph quartz movement. This calibre converts both natural and artificial light into stored energy, allowing the watch to run for extended periods after relatively short exposure. The system eliminates routine battery replacement, reducing long-term intervention and improving convenience.
From a historical perspective, this approach aligns closely with TAG Heuer’s long-standing engagement with quartz innovation. The original Formula 1 embraced quartz as a modern, reliable solution at a time when it represented progress rather than compromise. The Solargraph continues that tradition using contemporary energy storage technology. Accuracy is consistent with high-grade quartz standards, and the movement is engineered for durability and reliability.
Green Rubber Strap and Wearability
The watch is fitted with a green rubber strap that integrates cleanly with the case. The strap is flexible, robust, and designed for comfort during extended wear. Its colour matches the bezel, creating a cohesive visual identity that reinforces the limited edition’s design intent.
On the wrist, the watch feels light and secure. The combination of compact case size, composite construction, and rubber strap ensures stable wear during activity while remaining comfortable for everyday use.
Limited Edition Context
This Solargraph is produced in a limited run of 1,000 pieces worldwide. Rather than relying on precious materials or exclusivity through price, TAG Heuer differentiates this edition through colour, material choice, and conceptual clarity. This mirrors the original Formula 1 ethos, where identity was driven by innovation, accessibility, and motorsport culture rather than formality.
Motorsport Heritage and Design Continuity
The Formula 1 name has always carried a direct association with motorsport, both culturally and technically. TAG Heuer’s involvement in racing timing and sponsorship shaped watches that emphasised readability, resilience, and precision. This Solargraph continues that lineage by focusing on tools designed for real-world use rather than symbolic association.
The red and green execution reflects the visual intensity of motorsport environments, where colour, contrast, and immediacy matter.
Final Thoughts
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph WBY1160.FT8085 limited edition is a confident and historically coherent expression of the Formula 1 identity. Its red composite case, green bidirectional rotating bezel, and green rubber strap reconnect directly with the bold, experimental design language that defined the line’s origins. At the same time, its solar-powered movement and modern construction ensure practicality and longevity. Limited to 1,000 pieces, it demonstrates how TAG Heuer continues to evolve the Formula 1 concept without losing sight of what made it relevant in the first place.
