Why we love this watch

The Rolex GMT-Master 16713 is one of those watches that makes you feel like you’ve got a first-class ticket to wherever you want to go. Launched in the mid-80s and produced until the early 2000s, it represents the golden age of Rolex sports watches: tough, reliable, and stylish with a hint of adventure. The 16713, in particular, is a bit of a legend in the Rolex world, combining the GMT-Master's iconic functionality with a little extra flair thanks to its two-tone gold and steel case. It’s got the history, the look, and the practical features that make it a true grail for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

To understand why the 16713 is so highly regarded, it’s worth taking a quick step back. The GMT-Master, originally designed in the 1950s in partnership with Pan Am for pilots and frequent travellers, quickly became known for its ability to track multiple time zones. No more fumbling with a paper map and a pocket watch—just rotate the bezel, adjust the 24-hour hand, and voilà, you're set. Whether you were an actual globe-trotter or just someone who liked the idea of being one, the GMT-Master was the perfect watch for anyone looking to show they were in the know, even if you hadn’t crossed an ocean.

Fast forward to the 16713, and you’re looking at a watch that blends those classic GMT features with a bit of luxury. Unlike its purely stainless steel siblings, the 16713 has a bi-metallic case—stainless steel and yellow gold. This gives it a striking appearance that stands out from the crowd without being too ostentatious. It’s the perfect balance of sporty and elegant, making it just as suitable for a high-powered meeting as it is for a casual weekend away. And that two-tone look? It’s aged like a fine wine, growing more desirable as the years pass. The gold adds a layer of warmth and sophistication, setting it apart from the more utilitarian steel-only models.

The 16713 features the same 40mm case size that defines the GMT-Master line, which fits comfortably on a range of wrist sizes. It’s not just about looks though; it’s about practicality. With the ability to read two different time zones simultaneously, the 16713 is a traveller’s best friend, whether you’re hopping between cities for work or daydreaming about your next holiday.

Inside, the Rolex GMT-Master 16713 is powered by the reliable Calibre 3185 movement. This is a workhorse of a movement that keeps the watch running smoothly with that signature Rolex precision. It features a quickset date function, which, if you’ve ever had to adjust a watch without this feature, is an absolute lifesaver.

What makes the 16713 so appealing, though, isn’t just its utility or its durability—it’s the fact that it represents a period of Rolex’s history when they were still crafting watches that spoke to adventure and precision but hadn’t quite crossed into the world of polished, luxury exclusivity that we see today. The 16713 is still a tool watch at heart, and while it may be able to attend a black-tie dinner, it's just as comfortable at a bar or a weekend getaway.

The example we're talking about here—a 1994 "S" serial number 16713—is right in the sweet spot for collectors. It's the last of the line that featured the aluminium bezel insert, and these later models are particularly prized for their longevity and refined fit. If you're after that perfect blend of vintage charm and Rolex’s modern dependability, this is your watch.

And here's the kicker: while there are plenty of GMT-Masters out there, the 16713 is becoming harder and harder to find in top condition. Sure, there are some that have seen the miles and maybe even a few scratches, but pristine examples like this with a full set are rarer than a window seat on a flight to Europe. If you're lucky enough to get your hands on one, don’t sit on it too long – watches like these don’t hang around forever.
