Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable models in Rolex’s lineup, with roots as deep in international travel as the jet-age itself. Launched in 1955 and developed in partnership with Pan Am, it solved a crucial problem for globe-trotting pilots: how to track multiple time zones without the mental math. With its ability to display two time zones at once, it became the ultimate companion for high-flying pilots and adventurers—or anyone who just wanted to look the part.
Fast forward to the reference 16710, produced from 1989 to 2007, and you’ve got what many consider the sweet spot of the GMT-Master lineup. Powered by the Calibre 3185 movement and featuring the “quickset” date function, it made setting the date as simple as flipping a calendar page—no more spinning the hour hand. Its 40mm stainless steel case, luminous markers, and bezel options like the iconic “Pepsi” (red and blue) or the bold “Coke” (black and red) kept it versatile enough for anything, whether you were navigating time zones or just brunch menus.
The star of the show? Its aluminium bezel insert. Rolex eventually swapped it for ceramic, but collectors adore this vintage touch. Sure, it scratches more easily, but that just means every watch develops its own personality and a beautiful patina over time. Plus, as the last GMT-Master to feature the aluminium bezel, it’s like the last call in the boarding lounge—something you’d kick yourself for missing.
Now, about this particular example—a 1996 “T” serial 16710. It falls right in the middle of the reference’s production run, making it the ideal blend of vintage charm and modern reliability. These later aluminium bezel models are collector favourites for a reason: they represent the end of an era, with just the right amount of refinement to make them timeless. Just perfect!
And here’s the kicker—this watch is available now, but don’t hit snooze on it. Pieces this pristine are rarer than an upgrade to first class, and once it’s gone, good luck finding another in this condition. Grab it, throw on your aviators, and start planning your next adventure—you’re ready for takeoff.
