Why we love this watch

The Omega Speedmaster Professional, often affectionately known as the "Moonwatch," is an iconic timepiece that holds a revered place in horological history. Introduced in 1957, the Speedmaster Professional was initially designed for motorsport enthusiasts, but it soon became famous for its association with space exploration. This watch has been part of all six lunar missions and remains a symbol of human achievement and precision engineering.

Omega’s dedication to creating a reliable and robust chronograph was recognized by NASA in the 1960s when the Speedmaster Professional was subjected to a series of rigorous tests. These tests, designed to push the watch to its limits, included exposure to extreme temperatures, vacuum, humidity, shock, and vibration. The Speedmaster Professional passed all these tests, earning its certification as the official watch for NASA astronauts. It was first worn on the lunar surface by astronaut Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, forever cementing its legacy as the "Moonwatch."

The design of the Speedmaster Professional is both functional and timeless. This ‘Speedie’ introduced in the mid-1990s is a highly regarded model in the line-up featuring a 42mm stainless steel case with a black dial and a tachymeter scale bezel, which allows the wearer to measure speed over a fixed distance. This particular ‘Speedie’ is equipped with the bullet-proof manual-winding Caliber 1863. The hesalite crystal protects the dial, maintaining the watch’s vintage aesthetic while ensuring durability.

One of the most compelling aspects of the Speedmaster Professional is its versatility. It can effortlessly transition from a rugged tool watch to an elegant accessory, suitable for both casual and formal occasions. The watch’s design has remained largely unchanged over the decades, a testament to its enduring appeal and functionality.

Collectors and enthusiasts are drawn to the Speedmaster Professional not only for its historical significance but also for its exceptional craftsmanship. Each component of the watch is meticulously crafted, reflecting Omega’s commitment to quality and precision. The chronograph functions, including the central chronograph hand, 30-minute recorder, and 12-hour recorder, provide practical utility for a variety of timing needs.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional continues to be a favourite among watch enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Its rich heritage, combined with its enduring design and robust functionality, makes it a timeless piece that transcends generations. For those looking to own a piece of horological history, the Speedmaster Professional is an essential addition to any collection. We’ll go further and say that not only every serious collector needs a Speedmaster in their collection, but in their regular rotation
