Rolex Datejust 1603 Blue 'Sigma Dial' 36MM 1970s
Presented in great vintage condition, this Rolex Datejust 1603 “Sigma Dial” 36 mm shows honest light hairlines around the case with original geometry intact. The engine-turned bezel remains crisp, and the acrylic crystal is clear in normal light. Crown action is positive; time and date set smoothly during careful handling. The Oyster bracelet exhibits some stretch as to be expected with age; links articulate well and the clasp closes securely. The silver sunburst sigma dial is in excellent condition with sharp printing; the σ flanking SWISS at six is present, indicating solid gold dial furniture. Applied markers and coronet present cleanly with tidy tritium plots. Hands are lightly oxidised with intact shape and correct alignment, matching the dial’s tone nicely. A strong, honest example that wears well and reads clearly at a glance. Given its age, treat this as a vintage timepiece; avoid water exposure and do not wear whilst swimming.

Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The 1970s Rolex Datejust 1603 with a silver dial epitomises mid-century Rolex design and appeal of the iconic Datejust range. First introduced in 1945, the Datejust quickly gained recognition for its instantly changing date mechanism, and by 1970 had solidified its status as one of the most revered luxury watches on the market. The ref. 1603 boasts a robust 36mm stainless steel Oyster case that offers dependable protection against the elements, alongside an engine-turned bezel that brings subtle texture and visual interest. This bezel style differentiates the 1603 from its fluted and smooth counterparts, highlighting the uniqueness treasured by many vintage Rolex collectors, particularly those seeking an authentic piece of horological history in Australia and beyond.
The silver dial itself projects a refined, understated aesthetic that can shift in tone under different lighting conditions, lending a lively quality to this classic Rolex Datejust. Hour markers, typically faceted batons for this era, retain excellent legibility, while the applied Rolex coronet stands proudly at the 12 o’clock position. At the heart of this vintage Rolex watch is the tried-and-true Calibre 1560 automatic movement, celebrated for its reliability and accuracy—qualities that helped cement Rolex’s reputation for precision timekeeping worldwide. Its Cyclops lens over the date window further exemplifies the Datejust’s practicality, making the date instantly readable at a glance. For many collectors, the allure of the 1970s Rolex Datejust 1603 lies not only in its distinctive silver dial but also in the movement’s superb engineering, which continues to maintain accurate performance decades after its production.
The Datejust 1603 enjoys considerable appeal on today’s vintage watch market, with well-preserved models commanding strong interest among enthusiasts who value its blend of heritage, style, and everyday versatility. Its 36mm case size sits comfortably on the wrist, seamlessly transitioning from formal settings to casual weekends, while its stainless steel construction ensures durability for regular wear. Easily an investment piece or a daily companion, the 1970s Rolex Datejust 1603 with a silver dial remains a prime example of Rolex’s enduring influence on watchmaking, showcasing a timeless design that continues to captivate collectors in Australia and around the globe.
