Why we love this watch

The Rolex GMT-Master 16750: A Collector’s Dream

The Rolex GMT-Master 16750 is a true gem in the world of vintage watches—a transitional model that hits all the right notes for collectors. And let’s be honest, finding one on the market is about as rare as scoring empty exit row seats on a long-haul flight from Sydney to London.

A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Released in 1981, the GMT-Master 16750 carried forward the legacy of its predecessors, remaining the go-to watch for pilots and frequent travelers while introducing subtle modern upgrades. It’s that perfect mix of vintage charm and everyday functionality—ideal for anyone who loves an iconic design.

A Brief History Lesson

The GMT-Master’s origins date back to the 1950s when Rolex partnered with Pan American Airways to create a watch that could keep up with the new era of long-haul flights. Pilots needed an easy way to track two time zones—home and destination—without doing mental gymnastics. The solution? A rotating 24-hour bezel and an extra hour hand. And just like that, history was made.

By the early ‘80s, Rolex saw the need for something just as dependable but with a little more convenience. That’s where the 16750 came in, powered by the Calibre 3075 movement, which introduced the quickset date function. No more endlessly rotating the crown just to move from the 31st to the 1st. This movement also ticked at 28,800 vibrations per hour, giving the seconds hand a buttery smooth sweep.

Aesthetic Appeal That Stands the Test of Time

Visually, the 16750 stays true to the GMT-Master’s DNA: a 40mm stainless steel case, that iconic rotating 24-hour bezel, and the signature Mercedes hands. Early models featured matte dials with painted hour markers, while later versions introduced glossy dials with white gold surrounds. While both versions are undeniably stunning, the matte dial holds a special place in the hearts of vintage collectors.

Then there’s the aluminum bezel insert. Unlike today’s ceramic bezels, which stay pristine no matter what, the aluminum ones develop a unique character over time. If you’ve ever seen one fade from black and red to a mix of charcoal and burgundy, you know exactly why enthusiasts get excited about patina. It’s like the kind of weathered charm that makes a beachside shack more inviting than a brand-new hotel.

A Short but Impactful Production Run

The 16750 was produced until 1988, making way for the GMT-Master II, which introduced an independently adjustable hour hand for even easier time zone tracking. Still, the 16750 holds a unique spot in Rolex history—it’s modern enough for everyday wear yet vintage enough to bring that old-world charm.

Spotlight: Our 1984 Rolex GMT-Master 16750

Now, let’s talk about something truly special—a 1984 Rolex GMT-Master 16750 with a matte dial and black aluminum bezel insert. This piece represents an era when Rolex was transitioning from vintage to modern designs, making its survival in original condition a rare find. Matte dials were soon phased out in favor of glossy ones with white gold surrounds, so tracking down an untouched example today is about as difficult as finding avo on toast for under ten bucks in Melbourne.

The black bezel adds an extra touch of class. While the Pepsi (blue-and-red) inserts tend to steal the spotlight, a black bezel offers a sleek, understated look. Over time, these bezels can take on a slightly faded, softer appearance, adding to the watch’s character. A little wear around the numerals? That’s the kind of lived-in charm modern pieces simply can’t replicate.

Inside, you’ll find the legendary Calibre 3075 movement, complete with that oh-so-handy quickset date. Whether you’re flying, or just going about your daily routine, adjusting the date is effortless. And thanks to its solid build and water resistance, you won’t feel like you’re risking a fortune every time you step outside.

Owning a Piece of History

There’s something about a vintage Rolex—especially a GMT-Master—that goes beyond just telling time. It’s a piece of history you wear on your wrist, a tribute to an era when global travel was still a novelty. Tough, reliable, and effortlessly cool, the 16750 has that intangible mojo that only comes with age.

When you wear one, you’re not just checking the time—you’re tipping your hat to decades of aviation history. Even though the world has changed drastically since the 1950s, the thrill of crossing time zones (and maybe showing off a little) never gets old. Whether you’re on a call with friends in London or kicking back with a beer in your backyard in Perth, that fourth hand keeps you connected.

The Collector’s Dilemma: Matte vs. Glossy Dial

Some collectors are die-hard fans of the matte dial, drawn to its warm, vintage appeal. Others prefer the glossy version for its crisp, contemporary look. Both have their devoted followings, and both are stunning in their own right.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste (and maybe budget). No matter which you choose, you’re getting a watch that played a crucial role in Rolex’s history. t quiche—both are great, but one might just speak to you more.

A Word to the Wise

Whether you fall for the matte dial’s vintage charm or the glossy dial’s modern sheen, remember that these are vintage watches. Their beauty lies in their history—subtle patina, gentle wear, and those quirks that make each one unique. If you love the idea of wearing something with a story, you’re in for a lifelong love affair.

In true Aussie fashion, we like to keep things relaxed and upfront. We’re happy to walk you through every detail, point out any signs of wear that give it character. Just a heads-up: once you try on a 16750—especially this 1984 matte-dial, black-bezel beauty—you might never want to take it off.

Final Thoughts

The Rolex GMT-Master 16750 is a legend for a reason. It bridges the gap between the original GMT-Master’s heritage and modern-day convenience, making it an ideal everyday companion.

Our 1984 matte-dial, black-bezel model is a particularly rare find—and undeniably cool. If you’re looking for a watch that embodies the golden era of aviation while being practical enough for daily wear, this is it. Whether you’re at a backyard BBQ or in the cockpit of a jet, this timepiece is built for adventure.

So if you’re keen, take a closer look and don’t hesitate. Watches like this don’t come around often—especially in this condition. Once it’s gone, you might be waiting longer than a rain-delayed cricket match. And we all know how long that can feel.
