Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi 16710 40MM (1996) – Box & Papers
Origins and Evolution
In 1989, Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II 16710, replacing the short-lived reference 16760. The new model retained the iconic red-and-blue “Pepsi” bezel but marked a significant technical leap: an independently adjustable local hour hand thanks to the upgraded calibre 3185. This feature allowed wearers—particularly long-haul pilots and frequent travellers—to set local time without stopping the movement or affecting the 24-hour “home” time.
By 1996, the 16710 was in full production. Still fitted with hollow end links and tritium lume, this era represents the classic travel watch before the gradual shift toward modern Rolex refinements. Models from this period feature lug holes and thinner cases than modern equivalents, staying true to the tool-watch DNA of the GMT line.
Case, Bezel & Bracelet
The 40mm Oystersteel case wears slim on the wrist at approximately 12.4mm. It features drilled lugs for easy strap changes—a practical touch appreciated by pilots and collectors alike. This 1996 model comes fitted with a 78360 Oyster bracelet and 501B hollow end links, both in excellent condition with minimal stretch.
The aluminium Pepsi bezel, with its bi-directional 120-click mechanism, presents with the period-correct fat-font insert. The bezel remains fully functional and tactile, with knurling that still grips well.
Dial & Hands
This example retains its original tritium dial, marked "T<25" at six o’clock. Hour markers are applied white gold, and the handset includes the signature Mercedes hour, sword-style minute, lollipop seconds, and red GMT hand with luminous triangle.
Collectors will appreciate the correct font layout on the dial, including the classic “OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE” text and narrow “II” in GMT-MASTER II—hallmarks of early '90s production.
Movement
Powering the watch is the reliable calibre 3185, a COSC-certified automatic movement running at 28,800 vph with a 50-hour power reserve. It features a full balance bridge, free-sprung balance with Breguet overcoil, and microstella regulation. The key innovation—the jumping local hour hand—functions smoothly, allowing instant adjustments while travelling without interrupting timekeeping.
Collector's Context
The 1996 GMT-Master II 16710 sits at a pivotal point in Rolex history. It predates the transition to Luminova (1998), solid end links (2000), and the eventual shift to ceramic bezels (2007). With its original box and papers, this example is highly desirable, offering a snapshot of Rolex’s golden era of tool watches—rugged, functional, and built with purpose.
This reference combines vintage charm—tritium lume, drilled lugs, hollow end links—with modern usability, making it a smart choice for collectors who value character and heritage without sacrificing wearability.
