Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
A Legacy Born Out of the Aviation Golden Age
The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the brand’s icons, with strong ties to the early days of international flight. In 1955, it was developed by Rolex in collaboration with Pan Am to solve a crucial issue faced by pilots: effortlessly tracking two time zones without complex calculations.
By displaying two time zones distinctly, the GMT-Master quickly became the instrument of choice for long-haul pilots, global travellers, and those drawn to the excitement of the jet-age lifestyle. Its reputation for precision, durability, and stylish design solidified its status as a timeless classic.
The Evolution of an Icon: The Reference 16710
Fast forward to the reference 16710, produced from 1989 to 2007, and many enthusiasts consider it the pinnacle of the GMT-Master lineage. Powered by the Calibre 3185 movement, this model introduced the highly coveted “quickset” date function, allowing for effortless date adjustments without having to rotate the hour hand endlessly.
Its 40mm stainless steel case, luminous hour markers, and bold aluminium bezel inserts—available in the classic “Pepsi” (red and blue) and striking “Coke” (black and red) combinations—made it an incredibly versatile watch. Whether crossing continents or meeting mates for brunch, the 16710 proved to be the perfect companion for any occasion.
The Aesthetic Appeal of the Aluminium Bezel Insert
One of the defining features of the 16710 is its aluminium bezel insert. While later models transitioned to scratch-resistant ceramic, collectors continue to appreciate the aluminium version for the unique patina it develops over time.
Although more prone to scratches, this characteristic only adds to its individuality, making each watch one-of-a-kind. As the final GMT-Master model to feature an aluminium bezel, the 16710 holds a special place in the hearts of collectors who appreciate its vintage character.
The 2000 “P” Serial: A Balance of Past and Present
Among the various iterations of the 16710, the 2000 “P” serial stands out as a prime example of the model’s enduring appeal. Positioned perfectly within the production run, this variant strikes an ideal balance between classic aesthetics and modern reliability.
For collectors, the 2000 “P” serial marks the transition between past and present, representing the end of an era while still incorporating all the essential refinements that make it a practical and highly wearable timepiece.
