Why we love this watch
The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most iconic, collectible, and enduring models in Rolex’s extensive collection, known for its association with aviation and international travel. Originally introduced in 1955, the GMT-Master was developed in collaboration with Pan Am to meet the needs of airline pilots who frequently crossed multiple time zones. The watch’s primary function was to display the time in two different zones simultaneously, a feature that was particularly useful for pilots and frequent travelers. The original GMT-Master, reference 6542, was equipped with a rotating 24-hour bezel and an additional hand to show a second time zone. This design allowed wearers to track both local time and GMT simultaneously. The bezel, made of Bakelite, was not only functional but also helped distinguish the watch from others on the market, adding a unique aesthetic touch. Over the years, Rolex made refinements to the GMT-Master, including the transition from Bakelite to aluminum for the bezel, improving both durability and ease of use.
The GMT-Master II, released in 1982, took the design a step further by allowing the user to independently adjust the hour hand without affecting the minute or second hands, making it even more versatile for travellers. This model was powered by the Caliber 3085 movement, which allowed for greater precision and more flexibility in tracking multiple time zones.
The GMT-Master reference 16710, produced between 1989 and 2007, marked a significant evolution in the GMT-Master line. Introduced as the successor to the reference 16700, the 16710 brought several improvements and refinements to the GMT-Master II collection while retaining the core features of the original GMT-Master. Powered by the automatic Caliber 3185 movement, the 16710 introduced the “quickset” date feature, allowing wearers to set the date independently from the time—a convenient improvement over earlier models that required the movement of both hands to adjust the date.
The design of the GMT-Master 16710 also set it apart from other watches of its time. It features a stainless steel case, a highly legible dial with luminous markers for readability in low light, and the signature red and blue "Pepsi" bezel, which became an instantly recognisable feature. Over the years, Rolex also offered the 16710 with different bezel colours, including this watch which is the “Coke” (black and red), and is highly sought after by collectors. The perfect 40mm case size, which remained consistent through many iterations, struck a balance between being large enough for visibility and small enough for comfort, making it an ideal everyday wear for both adventurers and style-conscious individuals.
The Rolex GMT-Master 16710 remains a beloved model in the brand's history. Its combination of classic design, practical features, and rugged durability makes it a versatile tool watch that stands the test of time. As Rolex's last GMT-Master reference to feature the aluminium bezel, it has gained a cult following among collectors who appreciate its vintage appeal and connection to the brand’s legacy of aviation and travel watches. Today, the 16710 is highly regarded in the secondary market. Enquire now about this fine example of the Rolex GMT-Master reference 16710 “Coke”.
