Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most recognised and enduring models in Rolex’s collection, with strong ties to aviation and international travel. First introduced in 1955, the GMT-Master was developed in collaboration with Pan Am to meet the specific needs of airline pilots who frequently crossed time zones. The primary function of the GMT-Master was to display the time in two different zones simultaneously, a feature particularly useful for pilots and frequent travellers.
The GMT-Master II, launched in 1982, enhanced the design by introducing the ability to adjust the hour hand independently of the minute and second hands. This allowed for greater flexibility in setting time across multiple zones. Powered by the Caliber 3085 movement, the GMT-Master II offered improved precision and versatility for frequent travellers.
The reference 16710, produced from 1989 to 2007, marked a significant evolution in the GMT-Master series. It featured the automatic Caliber 3185 movement and introduced the "quickset" date function, allowing the date to be set independently of the time—a notable improvement over earlier models. The 16710 also maintained the GMT-Master’s core features, such as the 40mm stainless steel case, a highly legible dial with luminous markers, and the option of various bezel colours, including the popular "Pepsi" (red and blue) and "Coke" (black and red). The 40mm case size struck a balance between legibility and comfort, making it suitable for both everyday wear and more rugged use.
One of the standout features of the 16710 was its use of an aluminium bezel, which was discontinued in later models in favour of more modern materials. This, combined with its classic design and practical features, has made the 16710 particularly sought after by collectors, especially those with an appreciation for vintage Rolex models. Its legacy as the last reference in the GMT-Master series to feature an aluminium bezel further enhances its appeal in the secondary market.
The 2000 "P" serial GMT-Master 16710 marks the end of the era for this reference, as it was produced shortly before Rolex transitioned to the 16710's successor, the GMT-Master II with the ceramic bezel. This example is often noted for its precise build quality and the subtle updates Rolex made in the early 2000s, such as improved dial printing and minor refinements to the movement. Watches from this period are especially desirable to collectors due to their position in the GMT-Master's production timeline and their appeal as transitional models, just before the major design shift that would come with the introduction of the updated GMT-Master II. This one is for sale but be quick as it won’t last long and we don’t know when we will see another that looks this good!
