Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
As the final Submariner model to feature an aluminium bezel insert before Rolex transitioned to ceramic bezels, the 16610 exudes a tactile, vintage allure that resonates deeply with purists. While newer iterations of the Submariner benefit from cutting-edge upgrades, the 16610 remains highly sought after for being understated and practical, encapsulating a no-frills design philosophy that prioritises functionality.
The Submariner 16610 is renowned for its iconic design, which has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the late 1980s. The 40mm Oyster case, meticulously crafted from Rolex’s proprietary 904L stainless steel, offers exceptional resistance to corrosion and wear, surpassing the durability of standard 316L steel commonly used in other high-end timepieces. This robust construction ensures that the 16610 not only withstands the rigours of underwater exploration but also maintains its pristine appearance in everyday settings.
A standout feature of the 16610 is its aluminium bezel insert, which provides a distinct, tactile experience that harkens back to earlier Submariner models. Although subsequent models have adopted ceramic bezels for their superior scratch resistance and modern look, the aluminium bezel of the 16610 remains cherished for its authentic feel and timeless style.
Central to the Submariner 16610’s enduring appeal is its tritium dial, a hallmark of Rolex’s commitment to luminescent excellence. Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, was traditionally used in Rolex dials to provide long-lasting, self-powered illumination. Unlike modern Super-LumiNova coatings, tritium phosphorescence does not require exposure to light to remain visible in the dark, offering reliable readability in all lighting conditions. Collectors highly value the tritium dial for its unique illumination properties and historical significance. As Rolex has phased out tritium in favour of newer luminescent materials, the 16610’s tritium dial has become a sought-after feature, often fetching premium prices in the secondary market.
At the heart of the Submariner 16610 lies the calibre 3135. Introduced in the late 1980s, the calibre 3135 is a self-winding is a COSC-certified movement. This robust movement boasts a 48-hour power reserve, ensuring that the watch remains operational even if not worn for two days. One of the standout features of the calibre 3135 is Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring, which offers enhanced resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. The calibre 3135’s proven performance and durability have cemented the 16610’s reputation as a dependable timepiece.
The Rolex Submariner 16610 is engineered to excel in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Its 40mm Oyster case, combined with a screw-down crown and case back, ensures water resistance to an impressive 300 metres (1,000 feet). This high level of water resistance makes the 16610 a trusted companion for professional divers and adventure enthusiasts who require a watch that can withstand extreme conditions. The Submariner’s unidirectional rotatable bezel further enhances its functionality for diving purposes, allowing wearers to accurately track immersion time. The bezel’s aluminium insert, while offering a classic look, also provides reliable performance under pressure, maintaining its integrity even in the harshest underwater settings.
While the Rolex Submariner 16610 may lack some of the modern features found in newer models, such as ceramic bezels or advanced movement technologies, it represents the culmination of an era where practicality and classic aesthetics took precedence over contemporary embellishments.
As the final Submariner to feature the aluminium bezel before the shift to ceramic, the 16610 offers a blend of vintage style and dependable performance, making it a valued piece for collectors and enthusiasts.
