Why we love this watch

Like an air-cooled Porsche 911, the Rolex Submariner 16610 holds a special place in the lineage of its model family, marking the end of an era. The 16610 was the last of the non-ceramic bezel Subs, a significant distinction for those who appreciate the raw, vintage charm of a more traditional design. Much like the iconic air-cooled 911, which gave way to more modern, technologically advanced models, the 16610 retains a simplicity and ruggedness that appeals to purists and collectors. The aluminium bezel insert—now considered more old-school compared to the glossy ceramic bezels of later models—gives the 16610 a tactile, nostalgic feel that many watch lovers still seek. The shift to ceramic in newer models may be a technological upgrade, but for those who value the roots of the design, the 16610 feels like the last of a breed that fused practicality with heritage. As watch expert Worn & Wound aptly puts it, “the 16610 remains the classic dive watch, a bridge between the old and the new."

For those who appreciate the classic Rolex dive watch, the 16610 strikes a perfect balance between heritage, durability, and style. Its design is timeless—clean, functional, and purposeful, with no unnecessary frills. Much like the air-cooled 911, it is a machine built to perform, with a design ethos that prioritises simplicity over excessive embellishment. The watch's solid build and understated elegance don't scream for attention; they quietly demand respect, whether you're wearing it on a dive, at the office, or as part of a collection. As Hodinkee states, "The Submariner 16610 is the quintessential Rolex, offering a refined elegance with a rugged soul." The 16610’s charm lies in its subtlety, as it doesn't try too hard to impress but rather lets its craftsmanship speak for itself. In a world where dive watches can often be flashy or overcomplicated, the Submariner 16610 remains a reminder that sometimes less is more.

The Calibre 3135 movement, introduced in the late 1980s, is the heart of the Submariner 16610. It is a movement that has proven itself over decades. The 3135 is a self-winding mechanical movement with a 48-hour power reserve. It is COSC-certified, meaning it meets the highest standards for chronometric performance, and features Rolex's Parachrom hairspring, which enhances its resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. These are qualities that make the movement not just functional, but resilient enough to withstand the harsh conditions of diving or everyday wear, much like the 911’s engine is built to handle both spirited driving and daily use. As A Blog to Watch notes, “The 3135 is one of the most proven and reliable movements in Rolex’s lineup, offering bulletproof accuracy and an exceptional level of robustness.”

The 40mm Oyster case of the 16610 is crafted from 904L stainless steel, a material that’s more resistant to corrosion and wear than the 316L steel found in many other watches. This makes the 16610 not just a luxury timepiece, but a tool designed to endure. The screw-down crown and case back ensure water resistance to 300 metres (1,000 feet), making it more than capable of handling any recreational diving requirements. It’s this robustness that gives the Submariner 16610 its reputation for being virtually indestructible. As Fratello Watches highlights, “The Rolex Submariner 16610 is a symbol of toughness, precision, and performance, making it a perfect companion for both everyday wear and extreme conditions.”

While the 16610 may lack some of the modern innovations found in its successors—such as the ceramic bezel or more advanced movements—it remains a testament to Rolex's ability to combine function and form. Like the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 16610 continues to be highly regarded by those who appreciate its pure, no-nonsense design and reliable performance. For collectors and enthusiasts, it’s a model that not only represents the end of an era but also stands as a benchmark for quality and durability, ensuring that it remains a coveted piece even decades after its production. Whether you're wearing it as a daily companion or admiring it as part of a collection, the Submariner 16610 proves that some classics only get better with time. As Gear Patrol sums it up, "The Submariner 16610 is a legend in its own right—simple, rugged, and timeless."
