Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
Allaine, including its Sous Marine line, is a relatively obscure brand in the world of vintage watches, and detailed information about its history is scarce. However, like many smaller Swiss watchmakers, Allaine’s rise and eventual disappearance can be traced to the shifting dynamics of the watch industry in the mid-to-late 20th century.
Founded in the early 20th century, Allaine gained some recognition with its range of robust timepieces, including its dive watches, like the Sous Marine models. These watches, built with quality craftsmanship, were in line with the growing demand for reliable, functional dive watches during the 1950s and 1960s. At the time, Swiss brands were renowned for their ability to produce durable and accurate watches, and Allaine’s reputation rested on providing practical, well-made diver’s watches at a competitive price point.
However, as the Swiss watch industry faced increasing competition in the 1970s—especially from the rise of quartz technology and the onslaught of affordable Asian-made watches—many smaller, independent Swiss brands struggled to survive. The quartz crisis, which severely impacted traditional mechanical watchmakers, forced many to shut down or be absorbed by larger companies. Unfortunately, Allaine, like many of its peers, was not able to withstand these pressures, and the brand eventually faded into obscurity.
Today, Allaine is largely forgotten by mainstream collectors, though its vintage models, particularly the Sous Marine line, are sought after by those who appreciate well-crafted, niche timepieces from that era. While the brand no longer operates, its legacy lives on through these rare, collectible watches, which continue to appeal to enthusiasts of vintage diving instruments.
The Allaine Sous Marine Diver 39MM 1967 is a notable example of vintage dive watch design, blending both style and function. The Allaine brand, known for its commitment to producing reliable, high-quality timepieces, gained significant recognition in the mid-20th century. Founded in Switzerland, Allaine became particularly respected for its diver’s watches, which catered to both professional divers and watch enthusiasts seeking durable, precision timepieces. The 1967 Sous Marine Diver was a key model in this legacy, offering the perfect combination of ruggedness and sophistication.
The 1967 model, with its clean, minimalist design, is a tribute to the era when dive watches were beginning to evolve from tool watches to stylish everyday wearers. Collectors today appreciate the Allaine Sous Marine Diver for its vintage charm, mechanical reliability, and its role in the evolution of dive watch history. For enthusiasts, it’s a reminder of a time when Swiss craftsmanship was synonymous with practical, high-performance watches that didn't compromise on style.
