Cartier Santos Carrée Automatic 24x35mm Circa 1980s

Case is in good vintage condition with light hairline scratches visible around the case sides under close inspection, consistent with careful wear over time. There are no major dents, deep gouges, or signs of impact. Both case and bracelet remain unpolished, retaining original factory lines, crisp edges, and brushing, which preserves the watch’s authenticity and profile.

Bracelet is in good condition with light surface hairlines visible, typical of regular use, and no excessive stretch or deformation noted. Dial and hands are in excellent condition, with clean surfaces, strong printing and no visible spotting, discolouration, or deterioration, presenting very well on the wrist.

Why we love this watch

Cartier Santos Carrée Octagon 0902

The Cartier Santos Carrée Octagon 0902 belongs to a period when Cartier revisited many of its foundational designs and reinterpreted them through a more angular and architectural lens. Before this era, the Santos had already earned its place as one of the earliest purpose built wristwatches. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Cartier saw an opportunity to expand the collection through new shapes while respecting its established identity. The result was the Santos Carrée Octagon, a family of watches that kept the traditional Santos features but explored them within an eight sided structure. Among these, the reference 0902 stands out as a stainless steel automatic model that captures a transitional moment in the evolution of the Santos line.

Origins of the Cartier Santos

The origins of the Santos date back to 1904, when Louis Cartier designed a watch for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The ability to read the time during flight was a practical requirement, and this need shaped the watch’s flat case, exposed screws and clear Roman numeral dial. These characteristics became central to the identity of the Santos and influenced countless later variations.

As Cartier approached the final decades of the twentieth century, the company sought to bring the Santos into a more contemporary context. This included exploring the integrated bracelet format that had begun to define many modern sports inspired watches. The Santos Carrée emerged from this environment as a squared reinterpretation of the original form. Once the squared Carrée platform was established, Cartier began experimenting with further geometric variations, leading to the creation of the Santos Carrée Octagon.

The Development of the Santos Carrée Octagon

The octagonal interpretation of the Santos was built directly on the structure of the Carrée case. Instead of a square bezel, the watch carried an eight sided version that retained the screw set architecture but introduced new surfaces and angles. This development reflected Cartier’s broader interest in geometric shapes at the time, which could also be seen in models such as the Ceinture and certain Tank variants.

The 0902 formed part of the stainless steel automatic versions of the Octagon series. Many Santos models in the same era used quartz movements. The 0902 instead used a mechanical automatic calibre, placing it among the traditional watchmaking entries within the Santos Octagon family. This combination of shape experimentation and mechanical construction makes the reference an informative example of how Cartier approached design across multiple directions at once.

Case Design and Proportions

The Santos Carrée Octagon 0902 features a stainless steel case with a clearly defined octagonal bezel. The bezel is secured with eight screws and remains one of the most recognisable links between the 0902 and the original Santos. The case typically measures around thirty millimetres across, depending on production period, and reflects the more compact sizing that was standard for many Cartier watches during this era.

The finishing uses a mix of brushed and polished steel. The top of the bezel is usually brushed, while the angled sides and case flanks are polished to emphasise the shape. The overall profile of the watch remains flat and angular, confirming its position within the Carrée rather than Galbée lineage. Galbée models introduced later were known for their curved mid cases, whereas the 0902 remains defined by its straight lines and geometric clarity.

The cabochon set crown contributes an element of continuity across the Cartier catalogue. This detail appears in many of the maison’s watches and connects the 0902 to both earlier and later Cartier creations.

Bracelet Construction

The bracelet is integrated into the case, continuing the structural direction introduced in the Santos Carrée. Constructed entirely of stainless steel, it includes visible screws on each link that mirror the screws on the bezel and reinforce the overall theme of functional construction. The bracelet tapers gradually toward the clasp and was engineered to articulate smoothly around the wrist.

The clasp is a folding deployant style and is designed to blend into the bracelet when closed. Cartier placed significant emphasis on the fit and stability of its bracelets during this era, and the 0902 benefits from that attention.

Dial Configuration

The dial of the 0902 presents the familiar Cartier layout that has remained largely unchanged for decades. A silvered or white lacquered surface sets the background for black Roman numerals arranged in Cartier’s elongated serif style. A railroad minute track frames the numerals and provides clear reference markings for the hands.

The blued sword shaped hands are treated through a thermal process that produces their colour. They provide effective contrast against the pale dial and contribute to the recognisable visual identity that Cartier maintained across many of its watches. The Cartier name appears beneath the twelve o clock numeral, while Swiss or Swiss Made marks appear at the lower edge depending on when the watch was produced. Some dials include Cartier’s secret signature, a micro printed marking incorporated into a Roman numeral.

Most 0902 examples do not carry a date window, and the absence of this feature keeps the dial balanced and uncluttered in a way that aligns with Cartier’s traditional approach to time only displays.

Automatic Movement

At the core of the 0902 is a mechanical automatic movement. The calibre most commonly used is the ETA 2671, a compact and proven movement selected for its reliability and suitability for smaller case designs. The calibre operates at twenty eight thousand eight hundred vibrations per hour and includes a power reserve of approximately thirty eight hours. It winds automatically in both directions and contains twenty five jewels.

Cartier customised the movement with a Cartier signed rotor but otherwise retained the underlying architecture. The calibre is known for long term serviceability, which contributes to the practicality of the 0902 within Cartier’s vintage catalogue. Its inclusion marked an important contrast to the many quartz Santos models available at the time and reflects Cartier’s continued participation in mechanical watchmaking even during a period when quartz technology was the dominant force in the industry.

Caseback and Identification

The caseback of the 0902 is stainless steel and secured with screws. Engravings identify the watch as a Cartier model and include the reference number, the serial number and the material designation. These markings help confirm authenticity and place the watch accurately within the Santos Carrée Octagon family.

The screw secured caseback also contributes to the everyday durability of the watch. While not designed for significant water exposure, the model provides a level of resistance suitable for routine daily use when maintained appropriately.

Position Within the Santos Line

Placing the 0902 within the correct context allows its design direction to be understood more clearly. The reference belongs to the Santos Carrée generation, which is defined by flat mid cases, angular geometry and integrated bracelets. It is distinct from the later Santos Galbée, which introduced curved case construction and a more contoured bracelet design.

The 0902 fits within Cartier’s pattern of expanding established models by adjusting their geometry rather than reinventing their core features. This approach allowed Cartier to introduce new shapes while preserving the essential characteristics that define the Santos.

Historical Significance

The Santos Carrée Octagon line reflects a period when Cartier embraced a more exploratory approach to case forms, moving beyond the traditional squares and rectangles while remaining connected to the original Santos. The octagonal bezel of the 0902 sits within the same creative environment that produced other geometric Cartier watches of the period. It also reflects Cartier’s willingness to offer multiple technical variations across a shared design platform. In the case of the 0902 this meant an automatic mechanical calibre housed within a modern geometric case.

The reference therefore demonstrates Cartier’s ability to adapt to changing industry conditions while continuing to refine and reinterpret its most established designs. It provides insight into how Cartier balanced traditional watchmaking, industrial design and evolving customer expectations during a transitional period in its production history.

Final Thoughts

The Cartier Santos Carrée Octagon 0902 highlights the way Cartier adapted its longstanding Santos design during a period of stylistic and technical evolution. The octagonal bezel, stainless steel construction, integrated bracelet and Roman numeral dial all reflect Cartier’s approach to maintaining the essential traits of the Santos while introducing new structural forms. The inclusion of a compact automatic movement adds a traditional mechanical dimension to the reference and links it to the broader history of Cartier’s watchmaking. In this way the 0902 serves as a clear example of how the Santos line developed through measured adjustments rather than dramatic reinvention.
