This Monza is great vintage condition. The case is solid, with some scratches. The lug lines remain sharp and clearly defined, retaining their original brushed finish. The PVD coating on the case is mostly intact, though there’s some wear along the edges, giving it a striking gunmetal look. The engravings on the caseback are clear, and the case number is well-defined.

The black dial has developed a lovely patina and is in overall excellent condition. The luminous markers have a creamy patina. The white-painted hands show subtle patina, matching the dial beautifully. The red chronograph seconds and running seconds hands remain in great condition, complementing the red accents on the dial.

Why we love this watch

We’re thrilled to offer an original Heuer Monza Calibre 15 Reference 150.501, one of the two original models released in 1976. The other featured a chrome-coated case, while this version is equipped with the more iconic PVD-coated case.

The 1975 season marked Ferrari's triumphant return to the top of Formula One. Niki Lauda had joined the team in 1974, securing two race wins that year, and by the third race of 1975, Ferrari unveiled its new 312T car. Designed by Mauro Forghieri, the 312T quickly became a dominant force in the sport. Lauda won five of the final 10 races of the season. Ferrari claimed the Constructors' Championship by a commanding margin, outpacing rivals Brabham and McLaren. Lauda sealed the Drivers' Championship at the penultimate race of the season, securing third place at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

For Heuer, Ferrari’s dual championship victories were more than just a successful sponsorship deal. Heuer had been a key partner, providing the timing equipment that helped the Ferrari team gain a crucial edge both in testing and during race day. To celebrate this iconic partnership, Heuer created something truly special – the Monza chronograph. With Ferrari and Lauda’s Formula One success sealed in the autumn of 1975, the new Heuer Monza was introduced in 1976, marking a significant moment in motorsport history.

Monza was the first Heuer chronograph to feature a black-coated case, utilising a PVD coating over a brass base.

This original Heuer Monza is powered by the Calibre 15 movement, a variant of the Calibre 12 automatic chronograph developed in 1969 through a collaboration between Heuer, Breitling, and Hamilton-Büren

The Calibre 15 introduced a distinct and unconventional dial layout. The dial features a small seconds sub-dial at 10 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, and a quick-set date window at 6 o’clock. Despite the asymmetrical sub-dial positioning, the Monza achieves a sense of visual balance through intentional disruption, resulting in a dynamic and striking aesthetic.

The Heuer Monza holds a special place in TAG Heuer’s history and remains closely associated with Formula One and Ferrari. Vintage Heuer Monza models, especially the 1976 originals like this, are highly sought after by collectors. Their distinctive design, historical significance, and limited production make them valuable pieces in the secondary market. Modern reissues, such as the 2016 and 2023 editions, have also gained traction, combining vintage appeal with contemporary functionality.

From its origins celebrating Ferrari’s dominance in Formula One to its modern-day reinterpretations, the Monza reflects Heuer and TAG Heuer’s commitment to motor racing which continues today with their step back into the world of Formula 1 in 2025. Whether you’re a racing enthusiast or a watch collector, the Monza offers timeless appeal and a rich legacy. We don’t know when we’ll see another Calibre 15 Monza again, so make an appointment and race in!
