Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Omega Bullhead reference 146.011 is a unique timepiece, particularly for its offbeat design and limited production run. Originally introduced in 1969, the Bullhead has since become an icon among vintage Omega watches. Its distinctive case shape, top-mounted pushers, and revered movement all contribute to its cult following.
A Unique Case and Nickname
The name “Bullhead” was coined by collectors who noted the watch’s resemblance to a bull’s head when viewed head-on: the chronograph pushers protrude from the top of the case like horns, and the winding crown sits between them. This unconventional layout instantly set the Omega Bullhead 146.011 apart from more traditional chronographs of the era.
While most wristwatches place the crown on the right side of the case and the pushers around it, Omega opted for a top-loaded configuration for the Bullhead, placing the crown at 12 o’clock alongside the chronograph start/stop and reset buttons. This arrangement was designed for ease of use, particularly when measuring short intervals—an important feature for both professional and recreational timing tasks. A second crown at the 6 o’clock position operates the watch’s internal rotating bezel, allowing wearers to track a second timezone or additional timing intervals.
Origins and Production
The Omega Bullhead 146.011 originated during a period of notable innovation for the Swiss watchmaking giant. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Omega was pushing boundaries in design, materials, and technology. The Bullhead’s unusual case shape and technical features fit neatly into this ethos. However, while it debuted under the Seamaster range, the Bullhead was produced in relatively small numbers compared to other Omega models, making it a rare find in today’s vintage market.
Under the hood, many Bullheads house the manual-winding Omega calibre 930. This movement was derived from the renowned calibre 861 (famously used in the Speedmaster), ensuring reliable performance and precision. The calibre 930’s layout included a date window at the 3 o’clock position, set subtly against the dial for easy reading without overshadowing the watch’s sporty look.
Design and Dial Variations
One of the Bullhead’s defining traits is its dynamic dial design. The main dial is typically topped by a rotating bezel ring, which can be set using the secondary crown at 6 o’clock. This internal bezel was a practical and creative solution in an era when external rotating bezels were commonly found on dive watches. By moving the bezel inside the case, Omega provided an additional layer of protection against accidental bumps.
Several dial colours and styles were produced, offering different aesthetics. These dial variations are a significant part of the Bullhead’s appeal: collectors often seek out the rarer or more striking designs to add to their watch rotation.
Wearability and Function
The Omega Bullhead 146.011 is a sizeable watch, both in its case diameter and thickness. While it can wear smaller on the wrist than one might expect from its measurements alone—thanks to its relatively short lugs—some enthusiasts may find it heavier or chunkier than more conventional chronographs. Nevertheless, for those who appreciate a statement piece, the Bullhead’s presence is part of its charm.
Functionally, the top-mounted chronograph pushers allow for more direct pressure, making the timing functions highly responsive. The internal bezel, although less common these days, remains a handy feature for those who like to keep track of short time increments, whether for cooking, sports, or travel.
Collectability and Legacy
Due to its small production run, the Bullhead is relatively scarce in the vintage watch world. This rarity, combined with its distinctive design, has driven up demand among collectors. Original examples in excellent condition can command impressive prices on the secondary market, and certain dial variations or well-documented provenance can increase their value even further.
Omega itself has acknowledged the Bullhead’s cult status. In 2013, the company released a limited-edition reissue of the Bullhead, drawing inspiration from the original 146.011 but updated with modern materials and a Co-Axial calibre. This reissue only boosted the collectable status of both the vintage and contemporary Bullhead pieces.
Final Word
The Omega Bullhead reference 146.011 remains a standout example of the brand’s willingness to push design boundaries. Its top-heavy profile, unique dial layout, and robust movement underscore Omega’s commitment to both form and function. For watch lovers who appreciate individuality and seek a timepiece with a bit of attitude, the Bullhead is a compelling piece of Omega history. Although it may not be the easiest vintage chronograph to find—or to wear every day—its charm is undeniable, and its significance within the Omega catalogue is guaranteed. Whether you stumble upon a pristine vintage model or opt for a newer limited edition, the Bullhead’s story and style will undoubtedly make a lasting impression.
