Why we love this watch

Few watches manage to capture the spirit of celebrity quite like the Omega Speedmaster Red Schumacher reference 3510.61. At first glance, it’s that bold, bright red dial that commands your attention. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll discover a piece that skillfully weaves together the excitement of motorsport and the proud history of one of the most iconic watch families ever created. While many Speedmasters owe their reputation to space exploration—specifically, NASA’s lunar missions—this particular model shifts the focus back onto the tarmac, reminding enthusiasts that the Speedmaster’s story began in the world of car racing before it famously travelled to the Moon.

A Different Kind of Speedmaster Heritage

When people think of the Omega Speedmaster, images of astronauts, lunar landings, and space suits typically come to mind. However, the Speedmaster’s roots are firmly planted on Earth. In the late 1950s, Omega developed the Speedmaster primarily for motorsport timing; the tachymeter scale on the bezel was intended for measuring speed over distance—an indispensable tool for racers and engineers. This racing heritage often gets overshadowed by the Moon landing, but Omega never forgot where it all started. Fast-forward to the mid-1990s, and the brand decided to underline its ties to car racing once again, launching a suite of Speedmasters that took design cues from the track rather than outer space.

The Red Schumacher reference 3510.61 appeared around this time. Its striking, attention-grabbing dial is only eclipsed by its backstory. The meteoric rise to stardom of Michael Schumacher, destined to join the pantheon of Formula One greats, proved to be an irresistible fit for Omega. In partnering with him, Omega was able to bring attention to the Speedmaster’s original raison d’être—to chronograph motor races—but also breathe new life into its contemporary appeal.

Dial and Design Features

The first thing to notice when catching sight of the Red Schumacher Speedmaster is its eye-catching, striking dial. The standard black or white-faced Speedmasters most of us associate with the model are gone, replaced by a bold red backdrop that injects an immediate sense of flair and fun. White numerals and luminous tips on the hands ensure legibility against such a vibrant background, while the trio of sub-dials provides both chronograph functionality and a balanced aesthetic. The slender chronograph seconds hand, topped by the iconic Omega logo, is a subtle nod to the watch’s storied heritage.

Beyond the red-faced good looks, there are plenty of design elements linking it back to the Speedmaster legacy. The signature lyre-shaped lugs flow smoothly into the case, retaining a style that has remained largely unchanged since the Speedmaster’s inception. The tachymeter on the bezel is, of course, an integral feature for calculating speed, reinforcing the watch’s deep connection to motorsport. Though described as a “Reduced” model due to its 39mm case—slightly smaller than the 42mm Speedmaster Professional—this watch is by no means small on the wrist, maintaining a strong and recognisable profile without being overpowering.

A Movement for Everyday Wear

At the heart of the Red Schumacher Speedmaster is the Omega calibre 1143, an automatic movement prized for its reliability. While some of the more famous Speedmasters utilise manually wound calibres—especially those certified for NASA’s lunar missions—this automatic mechanism brings convenience to the racing world. You never have to think about winding it daily, and it’s robust enough to handle everyday wear while still delivering the chronograph functionality that Speedmasters are known for. In many ways, it fits the watch’s racing theme perfectly: strap it on, jump in your car, and hit the road, without worrying whether your watch is up to the task.

In certain Schumacher editions, you’ll even find a chequered minute track, reminiscent of vintage racing Speedmasters. While not every model in the Schumacher collection features this detail, it’s a subtle yet fitting tribute to the chequered flags that signal the end of a Grand Prix—another understated reminder that this watch was made for speed.

The Schumacher Connection

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this watch’s story is its connection to Michael Schumacher himself. In the late 1990s, Schumacher was breaking record after record in Formula One, eventually securing an unprecedented seven World Drivers’ Championships. Aligning a watch with someone of such stature allowed Omega to celebrate the synergy between precision timekeeping and elite-level racing skills. But beyond mere celebrity endorsement, this partnership felt organic. The Speedmaster was originally designed for racers, and Schumacher embodied racing excellence.

Wearing this special red dial Speedmaster is more than just strapping on a watch—it’s an extension of adrenaline, victory laps, and the high-stakes world of Formula One at its peak.

For collectors, this collaboration adds an extra layer of emotional significance. Owning a beautifully crafted, mechanically sound timepiece is one thing, but wearing a watch that connects you to a broader narrative—one filled with podium finishes, roaring engines, and champagne celebrations—is something else entirely.

An Uncommon Addition to Any Collection

Even though Omega has produced countless variations of the Speedmaster over the decades, reference 3510.61 stands out for several reasons. First, there’s the red dial—a rarity in a collection typically dominated by black, grey, and white tones. This vibrant contrast makes it highly desirable for enthusiasts seeking something a little different. Second, the slightly smaller case size makes it a great option for those who prefer a more compact, wearable design, offering an alternative to the full-sized Speedmaster Professional.

The fact that these models are no longer in production has only heightened their desirability in the pre-owned market. Finding one in excellent condition is a thrill in itself—akin to hunting down a classic sports car. Each watch tells a story—where it’s been, how it has aged, and who has worn it along the way. And because it is so closely tied to a defining era in Formula One history, this watch serves as a time capsule of the mid-1990s, when Schumacher was solidifying his place among racing’s elite.

A Celebration of Speed and Style

Ultimately, the Omega Speedmaster Red Schumacher reference 3510.61 is far more than just another chronograph. It stands as a striking testament to how a watch can transcend its functional purpose to become a cultural icon—bridging the worlds of motorsport legends, horological heritage, and design innovation. Whether you’re drawn to its bold red dial, the practicality of its automatic movement, or the thrill of owning a piece of Schumacher’s legacy, there’s no denying the special allure of this unique Speedmaster.

For those who appreciate Omega’s engineering excellence, Schumacher’s dazzling career, or simply the appeal of a watch that stands apart from the crowd, the 3510.61 is a must-have. It brings together elements of precision, performance, and personality in a way that few watches can. In an industry where countless models come and go, this “Racing” Speedmaster is proof that true heritage, when done right, never fades. It tells the story of Omega’s dedication to accuracy and style, solidified through its partnership with one of the greatest drivers in motorsport history.

And sometimes, all it takes is a bold splash of colour—and a whole lot of adrenaline—to create a lasting impression.
