Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Omega Speedmaster Professional, lovingly known as the "Moonwatch," is more than just a watch – it’s a piece of history wrapped around your wrist. First introduced in 1957, the Speedmaster was originally designed for motorsport enthusiasts, but little did they know, it would soon become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time. Its fame skyrocketed when it earned its place in space history, accompanying astronauts on all six lunar missions. In fact, this watch has been there every step of the way, quite literally – on the moon, no less – making it the ultimate symbol of precision engineering and human achievement.
Omega’s relentless pursuit of precision and reliability earned the Speedmaster Professional its stripes in the 1960s when NASA subjected the watch to a series of gruelling tests. These included extreme temperatures, vacuum conditions, shock, humidity, and vibrations – in short, they gave it a hell of a workout. The Speedmaster passed them all with flying colours, eventually being officially certified as the go-to watch for NASA astronauts. Its legendary status was sealed when Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, cementing its place in history as the "Moonwatch."
The Speedmaster Professional’s design is as functional as it is timeless. The model we’re featuring here, from the early 2000s was initially introduced in the mid-1990s. It is highly regarded for its classic look and reliable performance. With its 42mm stainless steel case, black dial, and tachymeter scale bezel, it’s a watch that’s as useful as it is good-looking. The bezel allows the wearer to measure speed over a fixed distance – just in case you need to time your next adventure. Inside, the bulletproof Calibre 1863 manual-winding movement keeps everything ticking along with Swiss precision. The hesalite crystal on the front protects the dial, preserving that vintage aesthetic while ensuring the watch stands up to daily wear.
One of the Speedmaster’s greatest strengths is its versatility. Whether you're dressing up for a formal dinner or heading out for a weekend of outdoor fun, this watch effortlessly transitions between casual and sophisticated. Its design has remained largely unchanged for decades, a testament to its perfect balance of form and function. It’s a classic that never goes out of style – and it works just as hard today as it did when it first went to the moon.
Watch enthusiasts and collectors are drawn to the Speedmaster Professional for more than just its historical significance. Omega’s craftsmanship is second to none, and every part of this watch is meticulously crafted, from the chronograph functions to the central chronograph hand, 30-minute recorder, and 12-hour recorder. These practical features make the Speedmaster not only a collector's dream but also a highly functional tool for everyday use.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional is a must-have for any serious collector – and let’s face it, it’s a watch that deserves a place in your regular rotation. With its rich history, robust functionality, and classic design, the Speedmaster transcends generations. So, if you're looking to own a slice of horological greatness, now’s your chance. Don’t wait – this one won’t stick around for long!
