Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The 16014 is part of the Rolex Datejust family, which has been a pillar of Rolex’s collection since its debut in 1945. What sets this reference apart is its distinctive white gold fluted bezel, stainless steel case, and Jubilee or Oyster bracelet options. Paired with the automatic Calibre 3035 movement, this watch offers both beauty and precision, making it a favourite among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Whether worn as a daily timepiece, a dress watch, or a collector’s piece, the Rolex Datejust 16014 remains a quintessential Rolex—a watch that perfectly balances luxury and practicality.
The History of the Rolex Datejust
The Birth of the Datejust
The Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 to mark the 40th anniversary of Rolex. It was a groundbreaking timepiece, being the first automatic wristwatch with a date window that changed instantaneously at midnight.
Rolex designed the Datejust to be a versatile, everyday luxury watch, suitable for both formal and casual wear. The original models featured a 36mm case, an automatic movement, and Rolex’s signature Oyster case construction, making them both stylish and durable.
Over the decades, Rolex refined the Datejust design, introducing new materials, movement upgrades, and dial variations while retaining its iconic DNA. By the late 1970s, the Datejust evolved into the 160xx series, which included the 16014—a model that would go on to become one of the most beloved Datejust references.
The Rolex Datejust 16014: Design and Features
Case and Bezel
The Rolex Datejust 16014 features a 36mm stainless steel case, a size that has remained unchanged for the classic Datejust line. Crafted from Rolex’s 904L stainless steel, the case is both corrosion-resistant and highly durable, making it ideal for everyday wear.
One of the defining features of this model is its white gold fluted bezel, which adds a touch of elegance and distinguishes it from Datejust models with smooth or engine-turned bezels. The 18k white gold bezel catches the light beautifully, enhancing the watch’s refined aesthetic.
The case design includes screw-down crown and caseback, ensuring 100 metres of water resistance, making the watch suitable for most daily activities, including exposure to water.
Dial Options
One of the highlights of the Rolex Datejust 16014 is the wide variety of dial options available. Rolex offered this model with dials in silver, champagne, black, white, blue, and grey, along with some rarer variations like linen-textured dials and pie-pan dials. This one being silver obviously!
The dial features applied hour markers, usually in stick or Roman numeral configurations, all crafted in white gold to prevent tarnishing. The Cyclops lens over the date window at 3 o’clock magnifies the date for improved legibility—one of Rolex’s most iconic design elements.
The hands are simple yet elegant, typically in white gold, ensuring a timeless and highly legible design.
Bracelet Options
The Rolex Datejust 16014 was available with two bracelet options:
• The Jubilee bracelet (Ref. 62510H) – This classic five-piece link bracelet enhances the watch’s dressy appeal. It is comfortable on the wrist and features a concealed Crownclasp for a seamless look. This is our favourite combination.
• The Oyster bracelet (Ref. 78360) – A more understated, sporty alternative, featuring three solid links. This option provides a modern and minimalist aesthetic.
Both bracelet options came with hollow end links, a characteristic of Rolex bracelets from this era. While these bracelets are not as solid as modern Rolex bracelets, they remain comfortable and lightweight, adding to the vintage charm of the 16014.
The Calibre 3035 Movement: Precision and Reliability
At the heart of the Rolex Datejust 16014 is the Calibre 3035, one of Rolex’s most important movement innovations. Introduced in 1977, the 3035 was the first Rolex automatic movement to feature a quickset date function, allowing wearers to easily adjust the date without cycling through the entire 24-hour cycle.
Key features of the Calibre 3035 include:
• Higher frequency (28,800 beats per hour) – This upgrade from the previous 19,800 BPH in the Calibre 1575provided a smoother second-hand sweep and improved accuracy.
• Quickset date function – A significant convenience improvement, making it easier to adjust the date.
• COSC-certified chronometer – Like all Rolex movements, the 3035 meets the highest standards of precision, with an accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day.
• Bi-directional automatic winding – Ensuring efficient power reserve replenishment for improved reliability.
The 3035 movement is known for its robustness and longevity, making the Datejust 16014 a highly dependable watch for everyday wear.
Wearing the Rolex Datejust 16014

Whether paired with formal attire, business wear, or casual outfits, the 16014 adapts effortlessly, making it a go-to choice for any occasion. The combination of stainless steel and white gold ensures that it retains just the right amount of luxury without being overly flashy.
