Why we love this watch

The Rolex Daytona 116520 occupies a key position in the chronograph’s lineage, representing the seamless transition from third-party movements to Rolex’s first entirely in-house calibre. To appreciate its significance, it is helpful to consider the Daytona’s broader history. Launched in 1963 as the Cosmograph, the early models were soon given the “Daytona” designation in homage to the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, reinforcing Rolex’s dedication to motorsport. These initial references, powered by manual-wind Valjoux movements, featured a tachymeter scale on the bezel, allowing drivers to measure average speeds.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Daytona slowly gained traction among enthusiasts, though it remained somewhat underappreciated until film star and racing aficionado Paul Newman inadvertently turned it into a cult phenomenon. His personal preference for the model, especially the now-iconic “Paul Newman” dial variants, created enormous interest and drove demand among collectors. By the late 1980s, automatic movements had become more prevalent, prompting Rolex to update the Daytona with a self-winding calibre based on a heavily modified Zenith El Primero movement. This era introduced references such as the 16520, which significantly heightened the Daytona’s popularity and solidified its presence as a flagship chronograph.

In 2000, Rolex debuted the 116520 and brought the entire production process in-house with the release of the calibre 4130. This movement, developed and manufactured by Rolex, reduced the number of components, simplified servicing, and offered a higher power reserve than its predecessor. Its 40mm stainless steel case retained the screw-down pushers and triplock crown, ensuring 100 metres of water resistance and maintaining the Daytona’s traditional profile. Subtle refinements in dial design, along with the choice of black or white backgrounds, gave collectors the chance to appreciate a cleaner, more refined aesthetic. The steel bezel, engraved with a clear and legible tachymeter scale, reminded owners of the Daytona’s racing roots, serving as a practical tool for measuring speed.

This in-house shift marked a turning point for Rolex enthusiasts, who viewed the 116520 as a pivotal model that combined the Daytona’s storied motorsport heritage with modern technical independence. Over the course of its production, the waiting list for the watch was often lengthy, emphasising the strong demand for a steel Rolex chronograph of this calibre. Even when later Daytona models with ceramic bezels were introduced, the 116520 maintained a dedicated following, in part due to its classic look and historical importance as Rolex’s own chronograph milestone.

The Daytona’s story—from its early days as a modest racing companion to its status as one of the most coveted timepieces on the market—is intertwined with the development of motorsport timing and the evolution of watchmaking technology. By incorporating the first in-house automatic chronograph movement, the 116520 represents a key chapter in that history. Its robust design, precision-driven mechanics, and timeless styling have ensured that it remains a sought-after reference.
