Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
Understanding the importance of the Rolex Daytona to the watch universe requires a glimpse into the Daytona’s rich history. So...originally launched in 1963 as the Cosmograph and later named Daytona in tribute to the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, the watch underscored Rolex’s connection to motor racing. Initially equipped with manual-wind Valjoux movements and featuring a tachymeter scale on the bezel, these early models were designed to help drivers measure their speed.
Despite a (really) slow start in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, the Daytona’s status was revolutionised by superstar actor and racing enthusiast Paul Newman. His preference for the Daytona, particularly the models with the distinctive “Paul Newman” dials, sparked a surge in demand, turning the Daytona into a collector’s item. By the late 1980s, as automatic movements became more common, Rolex upgraded the Daytona to include a self-winding calibre derived from the Zenith El Primero.
The release of the 16520 model marked a crucial era underpinned by Rolex’s adoption of the self-winding calibre. This version was heavily modified by Rolex to meet their stringent standards, resulting in a chronograph that was both more reliable and easier to maintain. The 16520 was distinctive for its increased functionality and sleek design, featuring a larger, 40mm case size, screw-down pushers, and an enhanced Triplock crown which combined to offer improved water resistance up to 100 metres—retaining the Daytona’s characteristic robustness while refining its aesthetic.
The 16520 also saw the introduction of sapphire crystals and subtle enhancements to the dial and bezel. The stainless steel bezel, engraved with a tachymeter scale, was not just a nod to its racing roots but also a practical tool for measuring speed with greater precision.
The transition represented by the 16520 Daytona solidified its position as a flagship chronograph within Rolex’s lineup, substantially elevating its status and desirability. Its release marked the beginning of a new chapter where advanced mechanics and iconic design merged seamlessly, setting the stage for future innovations. The 16520 remains a highly sought-after model for collectors, appreciated for its blend of traditional Rolex craftsmanship and modern enhancements. This model not only continued but also enhanced the Daytona’s legacy as a symbol of luxury, performance, and unmatched precision in the world of high-end timepieces.
The tale of the Daytona, evolving from a simple racing tool to one of the most desired watches globally, intertwines with the broader narrative of motorsport timing and horological advancement. The Rolex Daytona 16520 is currently for sale and in very good condition, showing only minimal signs of wear on the case and bracelet. Light hairline scratches are visible on the clasp, typical of gentle use. The dial and hands are flawless, maintaining their pristine appearance. This well-maintained timepiece is an exceptional find for collectors.
