Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Explorer II ref. 16570 has earned its reputation as a rugged and versatile timepiece. Released in 1989 and produced until 2011, it has become a neo-vintage classic, offering a balance of understated style and robust performance. Designed originally for spelunkers (pretty niche market if you ask me), it has since become a favourite amongst collectors.
The 40mm stainless steel case strikes a perfect balance—substantial yet wearable—and its slim profile makes it suitable for both outdoor adventures and city life. While later models grew to 42mm with bolder accents, we prefer the 16570 for its more refined and understated aesthetic, which we think sits nicer on the wrist.
Its flat sapphire crystal and applied white gold indices ensure it feels contemporary even after more than a decade since its production ended.
Available in black and white “Polar” dials, the 16570 offers distinct options for collectors. The Polar’s bright appearance has made it popular, but the black dial delivers timeless depth and contrast against the steel bezel which you can see in our photos. Both versions are highly legible, with luminous markers and hands that make them ideal for low-light environments.
Functionality is at the heart of this model, featuring a 24-hour GMT hand and fixed bezel for tracking a second time zone or distinguishing day from night. This watch is powered by the Calibre 3185, which was later upgraded to the Calibre 3186 in the early 2000s, the movement is reliable, precise, and highly durable. With a 50-hour power reserve, shock resistance, and ease of servicing, it continues to perform to modern standards despite its age.
While the watch itself has aged gracefully, the bracelet and clasp reflect its era. Early models like this one featured hollow centre links and stamped clasps, which are comfortable for the wearer. Though the older clasps with micro-adjustments feel dated compared to today’s Glidelock system, they remain practical and functional.
Often overshadowed by the Submariner and GMT-Master II, the Explorer II has quietly built a following among enthusiasts who value subtlety over flash. Its niche origins and long production run have kept it more affordable than other Rolex sports watches, making it an appealing option for collectors and first-time buyers alike.
The Rolex Explorer II 16570 is a timepiece that proves its worth through reliability and versatility rather than status or spectacle. It doesn’t demand attention but rewards those who appreciate its understated elegance and practical features. Whether navigating time zones, exploring rugged landscapes, or simply wearing it as a daily companion, it’s a great addition to any collection.
