Why we love this watch

Rolex GMT-Master 16750: The Transitional Icon with a Magnum P.I. Twist

The Rolex GMT-Master 16750 is a bit of a unicorn in the vintage watch world—a transitional model that ticks all the right boxes for collectors and enthusiasts alike. And guess what? We’ve got two in stock right now, which is about as common as spotting Magnum P.I. without his moustache and trademark Ferrari (trying to say it rare).

The 1988 Gloss Dial—Sleek, Sharp, and Stealing the Show

If the early matte dial versions of the 16750 are all about vintage charm, the later glossy dial models—like our 1988 stunner—are pure sophistication. With white gold surrounds framing those luminous hour markers, the gloss dial took the GMT-Master into the modern era without losing an ounce of its adventurous spirit. It’s a watch that wouldn’t look out of place cruising Oahu’s coastline in a red Ferrari 308 GTS.

This 1988 glossy dial beauty is a prime example of Rolex’s ability to blend rugged utility with timeless elegance. It’s built to be worn, but let’s be honest—you’ll want to admire it almost as much as you wear it.

A Brief History—Because Every Watch Deserves a Story

Born out of a partnership with Pan Am in the 1950s, the GMT-Master was the answer to pilots’ prayers—a way to track two time zones without resorting to mental gymnastics. By the time the 16750 landed in 1981, Rolex had dialed in its formula, keeping the dual-time functionality while adding the modern conveniences that made frequent flyers—and collectors—fall in love.

The upgraded Calibre 3075 movement brought a quickset date function and a smoother, high-beat sweep that feels as luxurious as it looks. No more spinning the crown like you’re cracking a safe just to set the date.

Looks That Steal the Scene—Even in Hawaii

Visually, the 16750 nails that perfect blend of classic and contemporary. The 40mm stainless steel case, Mercedes hands, and aluminum bezel insert scream vintage GMT, but the gloss dial with white gold surrounds feels modern enough for daily wear. It’s the kind of watch that pairs equally well with a tuxedo or a Hawaiian shirt—just ask Magnum.

And speaking of the bezel—unlike today’s ceramic inserts that stay pristine no matter what, these aluminum bezels develop rich, faded hues over time. It’s a kind of patina that makes collectors swoon.

The Sweet Spot of Vintage Rolex

Produced until 1988, the 16750 represents a turning point in the GMT-Master’s evolution. It’s modern enough to handle everyday life (yes, even rain) but vintage enough to feel truly special. Think of it as the horological equivalent of the last air-cooled Porsche—a perfect mix of heritage and usability before everything went high-tech.

Ready to Join the Club?

Whether you’re after the warm nostalgia of the early matte dial or the sharp sophistication of the later gloss dial, we’ve got you covered. But don’t wait too long—these won’t stick around. Watches like this tend to disappear faster than Magnum’s Ferrari when trouble’s brewing.

And if you’re eyeing that glossy dial 1988 model, just remember—it’s got the kind of screen presence that would give Tom Selleck a run for his money.
