The Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 Double Red is a significant model in Rolex's history, known for its unique design and its association with deep-sea exploration. Produced from around 1967 to the mid-1970s, the 1665 model is easily recognised by the two lines of red text on its dial, which earned it the "Double Red" nickname. The first line, "ROLEX," is situated at the top of the dial, while the second line, "SEA-DWELLER," appears at the bottom. This red print set the Double Red apart from other Sea-Dweller models, which did not feature red lettering.
The Sea-Dweller 1665 was designed for professional divers who required a watch capable of withstanding extreme underwater pressures. Unlike the Submariner, which was rated to 200 metres of water resistance, the Sea-Dweller 1665 was built for much greater depths — specifically, it was rated to 610 metres. A key feature of the Sea-Dweller was its helium escape valve (HEV), an innovation designed to release gas that could build up inside the watch case during deep dives, preventing the crystal from popping off during decompression.
The two lines of red text on the dial were not only a functional marker of the watch's professional capabilities but also a distinctive aesthetic choice. The "Sea-Dweller" line highlighted the watch’s suitability for professional saturation diving, a field in which helium could cause damage to regular watches. The red printing, while functional in its own way, became a hallmark of the model and a feature that would later be phased out in later versions of the Sea-Dweller, making the Double Red particularly rare and highly collectible today.
The production period of the 1665 Double Red is typically cited as spanning from approximately 1967 to 1977. However, it is important to note that the most iconic examples of this dial configuration were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After this period, the red text was discontinued, and the model transitioned to more subtle dial designs, adding to the rarity and appeal of the early Double Red Sea-Dwellers.
Today, the Sea-Dweller 1665 Double Red remains a highly sought-after collector's piece. Its rarity, paired with its historical significance as one of Rolex's pioneering professional dive watches, makes it a standout in the brand’s catalogue. As Rolex was pushing the boundaries of water resistance and diving technology, the 1665 Double Red represents a significant chapter in the company’s legacy. Its enduring desirability underscores its place as an iconic piece of vintage Rolex history.
