The case of this 16610 is in remarkable condition, with sharp edges and original factory chamfers still visible. The case retains its clean lines. The bracelet shows minimal stretch, indicating it has been worn but not excessively, and retains its structural integrity. While light scratches are visible, they are consistent with gentle wear, adding to the charm of the watch without detracting from its overall condition.
The dial and hands have developed a warm, pleasing patina, further enhancing the vintage appeal of this example. The Tritium lume on the hour markers and hands has aged to a soft, creamy hue, complementing the unique Stardust Dial pattern. This harmonious combination of patina and dial texture makes the watch visually striking and highly desirable. The patina not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also tells the story of a timepiece that has gracefully aged over the decades. It appeals to collectors who value not just the technical precision of Rolex watches but also the organic beauty that emerges from the passage of time. Watches with such dials are increasingly difficult to find in good condition, especially with sharp cases and original details like factory chamfers intact. Its exceptional condition, rare dial, and subtle vintage details make it a true collector’s item.

Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Submariner 16610 holds a unique place in the brand’s history, marking the transition between traditional dive watch design and modern advancements. It was the final Submariner to feature an aluminium bezel insert before Rolex introduced ceramic, offering a tactile, vintage charm that appeals to purists and collectors. While newer models benefit from technological upgrades, the 16610 remains favoured for its simplicity and rugged practicality, embodying a no-frills design ethos that emphasises functionality and heritage.
Powered by the Calibre 3135 movement, introduced in the late 1980s, the 16610 delivers exceptional reliability. This self-winding, COSC-certified movement features a 48-hour power reserve and Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring, offering enhanced resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. Its performance and resilience make it well-suited for both diving and everyday use.
The 40mm Oyster case, crafted from 904L stainless steel, offers superior resistance to corrosion and wear compared to standard 316L steel. With a screw-down crown and case back ensuring water resistance to 300 metres, the 16610 is as capable underwater as it is versatile on land.
While lacking modern features such as a ceramic bezel or upgraded movement, the 16610 represents the end of an era, where practicality and classic aesthetics were prioritised over contemporary embellishments.
The ‘Stardust Dial’ refers to a unique and rare variation of the iconic Submariner reference 16610, featuring a dial with a distinctive, eye-catching speckled or textured pattern that resembles stardust. While this dial isn’t an official Rolex production style, it’s often attributed to natural aging, oxidation, or damage to the lacquer on the original dial. Over time, environmental factors like exposure to humidity, UV light, or heat can cause the surface of the dial to develop this unusual effect.
Collectors highly value such dials because they transform what would be a standard Submariner into a one-of-a-kind piece, often referred to as a “tropical dial” or “patina dial.” The randomness and uniqueness of the pattern are what make these watches so appealing to collectors.
Since the “stardust” effect is not a factory Rolex feature, its value depends on its appeal to niche collectors who appreciate unique aging. These variations can sometimes fetch premiums at auction or among private collectors, especially when the effect is even and aesthetically pleasing.
