Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Submariner ref. 16613, affectionately known as the “Bluesy,” is a standout in the Submariner lineup, blending rugged tool-watch functionality with pure class. Part of the 1661x series, it retains the classic slim case design which we at Crown Vintage prefer. This case predates the bulkier Super Case introduced with the 11661x series. Its iconic two-tone construction, known as “Rolesor” in Rolex’s lexicon, strikes a perfect balance between sportiness and refinement, effortlessly transitioning from casual to formal wear.
The term “Rolesor,” patented by Rolex in 1933, is a portmanteau of “Rolex” and the French word or (meaning “gold”). This designation refers to the harmonious combination of materials used in these watches—specifically, Rolex’s robust Oystersteel paired with 18 ct yellow, white, or the brand’s proprietary Everose gold.
Produced for 21 years, the 16613 saw minor updates in future models like the removal of lug holes and the addition of rehaut engravings in the mid-2000s for anti-counterfeiting. Made from 904L Oystersteel and paired with 18k yellow gold, the Rolesor design offers a polished, luxurious alternative to the all-steel ref. 16610.
The “Bluesy” stands out with its radiant blue sunburst dial and matching aluminium bezel. This distinctive look gives the 16613 vintage appeal. The aluminium bezels were later replaced by ceramic in newer models.
Powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 3135, introduced in 1988, the 16613 boasts a rock solid movement. Luminescence evolved over its run, moving from tritium to LumiNova and eventually Super-LumiNova, identifiable by changing dial markings.
Discontinued in 2010, the 16613 remains a sought-after collector’s piece. The enduring charm of the “Bluesy,” and its steady appreciation in value further cements its reputation as not only a stylish and versatile timepiece but also a sound investment for vintage collectors.
