Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Submariner, introduced in 1953, is the most iconic dive watches ever created. The Submariner is often likened to timeless cultural icons—a watch that, much like a great film or a classic album, resonates across generations. Though much has been written about this iconic dive watch, its appeal remains as potent as ever. The Submariner 5513 isn’t just a timepiece; it’s a distillation of Rolex’s design ethos and enduring legacy in horology.
Introduced in 1962 and produced until 1989, the 5513 has a lifespan that outlasted many of its contemporaries. Its no-nonsense design and robust build made it a favourite among divers and enthusiasts alike. The Submariner was developed during a time when deep-sea diving was gaining popularity, both as a professional pursuit and as a recreational activity. Rolex sought to create a tool watch that could withstand the rigours of underwater environments while offering reliable timekeeping. Unlike its sibling, the chronometre-certified 5512, the 5513 featured a non-chronometre movement, resulting in a simpler two-line text on the dial. This clean aesthetic, free from the extra verbiage of “Superlative Chronometer,” sets it apart from its sibling.
The simple dial, oversized crown guards, and domed acrylic crystal of the 5513 give it an undeniable charm. These elements not only reflect the practical needs of a dive watch but also embody the mid-century design language that Rolex perfected. The watch measures 40mm in diameter with a slim profile, making it versatile enough to transition from wetsuit to dinner jacket effortlessly. Over its production run, subtle changes in dial types, bezel inserts, and bracelets provided collectors with a variety of nuanced iterations to appreciate. We won’t get into them here, as there are many great articles available on the net.
Today, finding a 5513 in excellent condition has become increasingly difficult, with well-preserved examples commanding attention in the vintage market. Collectors often debate whether the 5512’s technical refinement outweighs the 5513’s simplicity, but ultimately, this boils down to personal preference.
The 5513 stands out not just as a tool watch but as a cultural icon. It represents a time when watches were valued for their functionality rather than their status. As the modern watch market becomes saturated with limited editions and inflated prices, the 5513 offers a refreshing reminder of Rolex’s roots—an era when practicality and timeless design reigned supreme. A time when ceramic bezels didn’t exist. Whether appreciated for its historical significance, aesthetic appeal, or versatility, the Rolex Submariner 5513 continues to capture the imagination of those who understand that great design never goes out of style.
