This Rolex Submariner 1680 boasts a case and bracelet in good overall condition, with thick lugs and factory chamfers that remain clearly visible. Light hairlines are present, yet the watch is notably well-preserved for its age. Its Mk1 matte dial is in flawless shape, offering sharp contrast and legibility, while the hands show only slight signs of oxidisation. The result is a vintage Submariner that balances authentic character with a dial that remains remarkably pristine.

Why we love this watch

The Rolex Submariner 1680 first appeared in the late 1960s, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Submariner line by introducing a date function for the very first time. This feature offered users practical day-to-day utility without sacrificing the tool-watch integrity that had already made the Submariner a trusted companion for divers around the world. Production of the 1680 continued for just over a decade and ceased around 1979, making a 1978 model like this one part of the final chapter for this particular reference.

Throughout its run, the 1680 underwent subtle modifications, notably the transition from red “Submariner” text on earlier examples to white lettering on later models. This version, with its classic black dial, features the automatic calibre 1575. The watch’s 40 mm stainless steel case, paired with a solid Oyster bracelet, provides the signature balance of style and durability that has defined Rolex’s professional range for decades.

The addition of the date window was more than a simple dial change; it represented a shift in Rolex’s approach to creating a versatile diving watch that could also function as a dependable everyday accessory. While early Submariners were focused purely on underwater performance, the 1680 signalled Rolex’s efforts to appeal to a broader audience, including those who needed a watch suitable for both underwater exploration and daily wear. The inclusion of a magnified date window on the crystal made it easy to check the calendar at a glance, an innovation that eventually became a hallmark of many Rolex models.

From a historical perspective, the 1680 aligns with a period when divers were testing the limits of scuba technology, and watchmakers were refining features to match these advancements. The Submariner was originally introduced in the 1950s as a dedicated diver’s tool, so the presence of a date function by the 1960s and 1970s reflected the growing demand for practical features in addition to depth rating. The 1680 became a symbol of that dual-purpose ideal, connecting the professional diving community with individuals who simply appreciated the watch’s sturdy construction and design.

Collectors today are drawn to the 1680 for the way it merges classic Submariner elements—such as the rotating bezel, Oyster case, and bold luminescent markers—with the novel date window. Those focusing on vintage timepieces appreciate the subtle nuances found across different production years, from dial typography changes to the size of crown guards. A 1978 reference sits on the cusp of the model’s transition, capturing the tail end of the 1680 era before Rolex moved on to subsequent versions that would further modernise the Submariner line.

Long before Rolex watches were known as symbols of luxury, they were crafted as practical tools designed to meet the demands of professional divers. This 1978 Submariner 1680 reflects that original purpose, offering a straightforward, purposeful design that still appeals to enthusiasts today. Its blend of functional features—like the rotating bezel, legible dial, and date window—speaks to the brand’s maritime origins, while its timeless styling ensures it remains relevant in modern collections. For anyone interested in a watch that balances classic aesthetics with a backstory rooted in genuine utility, the 1680 stands as a compelling reminder of the Submariner’s early role as an indispensable piece of dive equipment. That is why we love this watch!
