Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Submariner Date 1680, produced from 1969 to 1979, is one of the most sought-after models in Rolex’s history. Renowned for its robustness, precision, and iconic design, the Submariner 1680 is a significant part of Rolex’s legacy as a tool watch that has transcended its utilitarian origins to become a symbol of luxury.
This rare ‘Ghost bezel’ variation, characterised by the fading or “ghosting” of the bezel’s original black insert, adds an extra layer of vintage appeal to an already coveted timepiece.
The History of the Rolex Submariner Date 1680
The Rolex Submariner Date 1680 was introduced in 1969 as the first Submariner model to feature a date complication, marking a significant evolution in the Submariner line. This was the first time the famous dive watch came equipped with a date window at the 3 o’clock position, paired with the iconic Cyclops lens for magnification.
The 1680 model was powered by the Caliber 1570 movement, a movement known for its durability. It was part of the “family” of Rolex Submariner models that represented the company’s commitment to crafting highly functional and tough tool watches for divers and professionals. The 1680 was water-resistant to 200 meters (660 feet), and its rotating bezel was designed to track elapsed dive time — an essential feature for underwater navigation.
The 1960s and 1970s were pivotal decades for Rolex, as the brand began to transition its professional models, such as the Submariner, into highly desirable luxury pieces. While the 1680 was initially produced as a functional dive watch, its striking aesthetic and technical innovation made it increasingly popular with a broader audience.
Submariner 1680 vs. 16800: The Transition
The 1979 model of the Submariner Date 1680, which is often associated with the “ghost bezel” phenomenon, represents one of the last iterations of the 1680 series before the introduction of the 16800 in the early 1980s. The 16800 marked a significant shift in Rolex’s design philosophy, incorporating a sapphire crystal for improved scratch resistance and updating the movement for more precise timekeeping.
By 1979, the 1680 was on the cusp of this transition, and many of the models produced during this time have characteristics that are representative of the classic vintage Submariner look. The 1979 1680 models feature the traditional acrylic crystal, a steel case, and the rotating bezel with an aluminium insert—features that would soon be replaced by more modern materials in the following decade.
The Ghost Bezel: What Makes It Unique?
One of the most intriguing and sought-after features of the 1979 Rolex Submariner Date 1680 is the “ghost bezel.” This term refers to the phenomenon where the black insert on the rotating bezel fades over time, resulting in a lighter, greyish appearance. This fading is not uniform and can vary greatly from one watch to another, depending on factors such as exposure to sunlight, heat, or environmental conditions.
The “ghosting” of the bezel insert typically happens with aluminium bezel inserts, which were used on Submariner models like the 1680 before the introduction of ceramic bezel inserts in the later 1980s. The aluminium inserts are more prone to fading over time, especially when exposed to UV rays or extreme environmental conditions. In the case of the 1680, many of the original black bezel inserts gradually fade into a distinctive light grey or off-white hue. This unique and natural aging process results in the “ghost” effect that collectors find so attractive.
Why Collectors Love the Ghost Bezel
The appeal of the ghost bezel is not just aesthetic; it’s also about the rarity and distinctiveness it adds to the piece. The ghosted bezel gives the 1680 a unique, vintage look that differentiates it from other Submariner models. Each ghost bezel is different, and no two watches will have the same amount of fading or patina. As a result, watches with ghost bezels have become highly sought after in the vintage Rolex market.
Furthermore, the fading of the bezel insert is a natural process that occurs with age, making it a sign of authenticity and vintage character.
Conclusion
The 1979 Rolex Submariner Date 1680 with a ghost bezel stands as one of the most desirable vintage Rolex watches, particularly due to its striking design, unique ghost bezel, and connection to the brand’s history. For collectors, it offers the opportunity to own a piece of Rolex’s dive watch legacy, complete with a natural patina that only adds to its allure.
Whether you are an avid Rolex enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of vintage watches, the 1680 is a timepiece that is sure to captivate and excite. Its timeless appeal, rugged design, and historical significance make it a standout piece in any collection, and its rarity ensures that it will only grow in value over time.
