This 1973 Rolex Submariner 1680 is a remarkable example of a well-preserved vintage timepiece, complete with its full set, making it an even more desirable collector’s piece. Retaining its original charm, the case and bracelet remain in good vintage condition, with the clasp codes and case back dating aligning perfectly, confirming its authenticity. The bracelet is well-preserved, though some expected stretch is noticeable, a characteristic often seen in vintage Rolex models from this era.

One of the most distinctive features of this watch is the extremely rare patent spelling error on the clasp, an uncommon detail that adds a layer of uniqueness and collectibility. The watch is fitted with a sought-after MK6 dial, which is in good condition, with crisp text and an attractive patina developing naturally over time. The hands are also in good condition, maintaining a cohesive and well-aged look that complements the rest of the watch.

As a full-set example, this Submariner 1680 includes its original box and papers, further solidifying its status as a highly collectible timepiece. With its matching case and bracelet components, rare clasp detail, and attractive MK6 dial, this watch embodies the perfect balance of authenticity, vintage appeal, and investment potential. A true gem for any serious Rolex enthusiast or vintage collector.

The Rolex Submariner 1680 emerged in the late 1960s, marking a key turning point in the evolution of the Submariner range. It was the first model in the lineup to introduce a date complication, adding an extra layer of functionality while maintaining the rugged tool-watch DNA that had already cemented the Submariner as an enduring companion for divers worldwide. Production of the 1680 lasted for just over a decade before concluding around 1979. A 1973 model, such as this one, represents a crucial period in the reference’s history, capturing the essence of the era when Rolex was refining its approach to professional and luxury watchmaking.

During its production life, the 1680 saw several refinements, the most notable being the transition from red “Submariner” text on earlier models to white lettering on later examples. This particular 1973 piece retains the highly sought-after red text on its original black dial, a characteristic that has since become a defining trait of collectible early 1680 models. Powering the watch is the automatic Caliber 1575 movement, known for its reliability. The solid 40mm stainless steel case, paired with a robust Oyster bracelet, strikes the perfect balance between durability and sophistication—hallmarks of Rolex’s professional watchmaking philosophy.

The introduction of the date window was more than just an aesthetic update; it represented a fundamental shift in Rolex’s vision for the Submariner. No longer solely a tool for professional divers, the 1680 was designed to appeal to individuals who needed a timepiece that was both dive-capable and practical for everyday use. While earlier Submariners focused purely on underwater functionality, the 1680 signaled Rolex’s growing intention to cater to a wider audience—professionals who required both a highly functional diving instrument and an elegant wristwatch for daily wear. The addition of the Cyclops magnified date window made checking the calendar effortless, a now-signature feature found on many Rolex models.

At the time of its release, the 1680 coincided with rapid advancements in scuba diving technology, which drove watchmakers to continuously improve their designs to meet the evolving needs of divers. When the first Submariner debuted in the 1950s, it was strictly a professional diver’s instrument. However, by the 1960s and 1970s, the rising popularity of recreational diving and the increasing demand for more versatile luxury watches led Rolex to enhance the Submariner’s functionality beyond just superior water resistance. The 1680 became the perfect bridge between Rolex’s legacy of crafting professional dive watches and its expanding reputation as a maker of refined everyday timepieces.

Today, collectors appreciate the 1680 for its seamless blend of classic Submariner design elements—such as the rotating bezel, robust Oyster case, and luminous hour markers—with the practical addition of the date function. Vintage watch enthusiasts are drawn to the subtle variations across different years of production, from dial typography changes to slight differences in case design, including the size and shape of the crown guards. A 1973 reference holds particular appeal as it represents the era of the coveted red Submariner text before Rolex transitioned exclusively to white lettering in later models.

Long before Rolex became synonymous with luxury and status, its watches were built as dependable tools for professionals working in extreme environments. The 1973 Submariner 1680 is a testament to that legacy, showcasing a no-nonsense design that remains just as relevant today as it was when first introduced. Its combination of functional elements—including the unidirectional rotating bezel, highly legible dial, and practical date window—honors Rolex’s maritime roots while maintaining an aesthetic that transcends generations.

More than just a collector’s item, this watch represents an important chapter in the Submariner’s evolution. It serves as a reminder of the model’s origins as an essential piece of diving equipment while highlighting Rolex’s ability to adapt and innovate. That is precisely why the 1680 continues to captivate watch enthusiasts and collectors alike, standing as an enduring icon of both functionality and timeless style.
