Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Rolex Submariner 16800 arrived around 1979, representing a significant transition point in the evolution of Rolex’s diver’s watches. It combined classic Submariner hallmarks with upgrades that would define modern versions of the line. Foremost among these changes were the introduction of a sapphire crystal, which offered increased resistance against scratches compared to acrylic, and an elevated water resistance rating of 300 metres. The Submariner 16800 stood out as a pivotal model that bridged the gap between the earlier references and the more contemporary designs that followed.
This particular example was produced in 1985, placing it within a key period of the reference’s production cycle. By that time, the calibre 3035 with quickset date functionality had already been incorporated, allowing owners to adjust the date independently from the hour hand. This feature was a practical advancement aimed at making everyday use more convenient, appealing to both frequent travellers and anyone who needed to set the date quickly. The dial aesthetics also underwent subtle changes during the 16800’s run, evolving from matte to glossy designs with white gold surrounds on the hour markers. Watches produced in the mid-1980s can thus exhibit traits that blend the vintage appeal of earlier Submariners with more modern refinements.
Collectors often view the 16800 as a “transitional” model, precisely because it maintained the spirit of earlier references while showcasing forward-looking innovations. It occupied a period when Rolex was shifting focus from pure diving tools to pieces that balanced underwater capability with everyday wear appeal. Even so, this reference remained fully geared for underwater activities, adhering to the Submariner’s origins as a functional watch suitable for professional divers.
The year 1985 underscores a moment when Rolex was cementing many of the Submariner’s now-familiar features. Sapphire crystals, improved movements, and practical date functions signalled the brand’s commitment to modernisation without letting go of the design and purpose that defined the Submariner. Many owners appreciate this balance, noting that the 16800 showcases both a nod to vintage styling and a step towards the more contemporary Submariners that would follow.
Today, the Submariner 16800 continues to appeal to those who value its historical context and versatile design. It stands as an emblem of how Rolex integrated incremental improvements—such as enhanced water resistance and advanced materials—into a watch lineage that began decades earlier with the aim of supporting divers in their explorations. The 1985 example in particular sits at a juncture where the model had matured into a modern diver’s watch while still retaining touches of its vintage heritage. For collectors, this blend of eras makes the Submariner 16800 a compelling piece to own, representing both the brand’s past achievements and the direction Rolex would pursue in the years ahead.
