Seiko Diver H558-5000 'Arnie' 45mm 1982
Case and Strap
This Seiko H558-5000 is in great vintage condition for a watch made in 1982. The 45mm case presents well, showing only the light signs of wear you would expect after four decades. It is fitted to a strap that remains in very good condition.
Dial and Hands
The dial and hands are in very good condition. The analogue-digital layout that made the ‘Arnie’ famous reads clearly, and the bold hands contrast cleanly against the dial. Together they give the watch a crisp, well-preserved face that suits its purposeful 1980s design.
Use Advisory
This H558-5000 is over 40 years old and should be treated as a vintage timepiece. It was built as a diver’s watch, but we recommend keeping it away from water, sharp knocks and strong magnetic fields, and wearing it with the care a watch of this age deserves.

Hands, Digits and Hollywood: The 1982 Seiko H558-5000 “Arnie”
Arnold Schwarzenegger wore the Seiko H558-5000 through Commando in 1985, Raw Deal in 1986 and Predator in 1987, and that run of films gave this 45mm 1982 dive watch the nickname it has carried ever since. What he wore was more than a prop. Its dial combines analogue hands with a digital display, a pairing Seiko built into a working 150 metre diver at a time when quartz was still reshaping the industry.
From a Tokyo Repair Shop to the Quartz Revolution
Seiko’s story starts in 1881, when a 21-year-old Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in central Tokyo to sell and repair watches and clocks. In 1913 the company produced the Laurel, Japan’s first wristwatch. On 25 December 1969 it released the Quartz Astron, the world’s first quartz wristwatch, and changed the direction of watchmaking.
That background matters for the Arnie. Seiko did not treat quartz as a cheaper replacement for mechanical movements. It treated quartz as a platform for new functions, and by the early 1980s it was combining electronics with the case engineering it had built up over two decades of dive watches.
The same year the Arnie appeared, Seiko also released the world’s first TV watch, which could show television programmes on a 1.2-inch LCD screen and receive FM radio. That release shows the attitude behind the H558. In 1982 Seiko was willing to put screens, displays and new functions onto the wrist, and the Arnie applied that thinking to a watch meant for the water.
Two Decades of Seiko Divers
Seiko’s first diver arrived in 1965. The 62MAS was an automatic watch rated to 150 metres and the first diver’s watch made in Japan. A 300 metre professional model followed in 1967, and in 1968 the 6159-7000 became the first diver fitted with a hi-beat movement. In 1975 the Professional Diver’s 600m, later nicknamed the Grandfather Tuna, introduced the first titanium-cased diver’s watch.
Quartz reached the dive range in 1978. The 7549-7000 Golden Tuna is recorded as the first professional diver with a quartz movement, and the 7548 brought quartz to a 150 metre model the same year. With accuracy settled, the next step was function. Seiko’s answer arrived in 1982.

The Hybrid Diver
Seiko’s own heritage timeline lists 1982 as the year of its Hybrid Diver’s Watch, describing it as the first to carry both an alarm and a chronograph. The H558 family is recorded as Seiko’s first analogue-digital hybrid quartz range. The black H558-5000, catalogued in Japan as the SAD018, was joined by an orange-accented H558-500A, while export examples were marked H558-5009.
Inside is the quartz calibre H558. The hands give the time at a glance, as a diver needs, while the digital window takes on the alarm and chronograph. Each part of the dial does the job it is best at, so a watch from 1982 shows a lot of practical thinking.
Case and Construction
The H558-5000 measures 45mm across, around 46.5mm from lug to lug and roughly 11.3mm thick. It has a screw-down crown, a uni-directional rotating bezel, a Hardlex crystal and water resistance of 150 metres. Seiko tested the reference in temperatures from minus 40 to plus 60 degrees Celsius, and it sits within the wider Tuna family of Seiko divers. For a 45mm tool watch the profile is relatively slim, a point often made when the original is compared with its later reissues.
How It Became the Arnie
Schwarzenegger chose the H558 for some of the most watched action films of the decade. Commando, Raw Deal and Predator all show it on his wrist, and he is also associated with H558 models and modified versions in The Running Man. Across those films the watch did what it was designed to do, appearing through jungle, water and combat scenes, and audiences began calling it the Arnie.
The watch’s reputation also extended beyond the screen, with reported trips to the summit of Everest and to both poles. Seiko later acknowledged the original’s standing when it released the solar-powered SNJ025 and related models in 2019, a modern recreation of the 1982 design. The SNJ025 runs on a solar calibre H851, measures 47.8mm across and 13.8mm thick, and is rated to 200 metres. Those larger numbers make the slimmer proportions of the 1982 original easy to appreciate.
Final Thoughts
The 1982 Seiko H558-5000 brings together the main threads of Seiko’s history in a single 45mm case. The quartz calibre follows from the 1969 Astron, the 150 metre rating and Tuna lineage from the divers that began in 1965, and the analogue-digital dial from Seiko’s effort to give quartz new uses. Schwarzenegger’s films then made it famous. The nickname comes from Hollywood, but the watch earned its place through engineering.
