Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
The Heuer CS3110 is more than just a beautiful timepiece—it’s a direct link to one of the most significant moments in Heuer’s past.
The Birth of the Carrera
In the early 1960s, Jack Heuer was on a mission to redefine what a racing chronograph could be. He was inspired by the high-speed world of motorsports, where timing was everything and clarity was crucial. The name “Carrera” came from the Carrera Panamericana, one of the most dangerous and thrilling road races of the 1950s. The event, which stretched across Mexico, was notorious for its high speeds and extreme danger—qualities that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of racing.
Jack Heuer wanted to create a chronograph that was tailor-made for drivers—something elegant yet incredibly practical. He stripped away unnecessary elements, focusing on a clean, highly legible dial with an open design. The result was the 1963 Heuer Carrera, a watch that set new standards for motorsport timepieces. Its sharp case lines, simple yet bold hour markers, and precise chronograph movement quickly made it a favourite among professional drivers.
A Legacy That Spans Decades
The Carrera was more than just a hit; it became a defining timepiece for Heuer. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, it evolved, incorporating different movements and design elements while always staying true to Jack Heuer’s original philosophy. The watch cemented Heuer’s reputation as a leader in chronograph design, with models worn by legendary racers and enthusiasts alike.
The 1990s Revival: Enter the CS3110
By the 1990s, the resurgence of interest in vintage watches led TAG Heuer to revisit its greatest hits. Among these was the Carrera, and in 1996, the CS3110 was introduced as a faithful reissue of the original 1963 model. Unlike many modern reinterpretations that take creative liberties, the CS3110 stayed remarkably true to its roots. Its 36mm stainless steel case, clean dial layout, and domed acrylic crystal all paid homage to the original Carrera. The main difference was inside—while the 1963 Carrera housed a Valjoux 72 movement, the CS3110 used a more modern, reliable Lemania 1873, the same movement found in the Omega Speedmaster.
This attention to detail made the CS3110 an instant favourite among collectors. It wasn’t just a watch—it was a time capsule, a tangible connection to Heuer’s golden era. It represented a bridge between past and present, allowing enthusiasts to experience the magic of the original Carrera while benefiting from improved durability and accuracy.
Why the CS3110 Still Matters Today
Fast forward to today, and the CS3110 remains one of the most beloved Carrera reissues ever made. While TAG Heuer has continued to expand the Carrera lineup with modern designs, the CS3110 stands apart as a pure expression of the model’s original DNA. It reminds us of an era when motorsport and watchmaking were deeply intertwined—when timing a race wasn’t just a function but an art form.
For collectors, owning a CS3110 is about more than just having a vintage-inspired watch. It’s about owning a piece of history—a watch that tells the story of Jack Heuer’s vision, the rise of motorsport chronographs, and the enduring appeal of timeless design. Whether worn on the wrist or displayed in a collection, the CS3110 remains a testament to why the Carrera is one of the most iconic chronographs of all time.
