Why we love this watch
Why we love this watch
So, why are we presenting a plastic Tag Heuer alongside our collection of Rolex, Omega, Breguet and A. Lange & Söhne? Because we love this watch, and If you grew up in the early 90s, you probably wanted this watch. It’s a bloody good timepiece that tells the time and looks great while doing it. This watch is all about fun, and let's face it, we need more of that.
Now, let’s get one thing straight: the WA1210 isn’t about luxury or refined elegance. It’s about *plastic* – and loads of it. The bezel is made of the stuff, and the strap is chunky rubber. The whole thing feels a little bit like wearing a toy car on your wrist, which, frankly, is awesome. It’s not for those who want a classic precious metal, polished-to-perfection kind of watch. It’s a slap-you-in-the-face, here’s-a-colourful watch that makes you want to jump into a go-kart and tear up the track.
TAG Heuer’s association with Formula 1 has always been more about speed and precision than stuffy luxury, and the WA1210 is a perfect embodiment of that spirit. It’s a fun, accessible homage to the motorsport world, especially for those of us who couldn’t afford a Ferrari back in the day (or now in the case of yours truly). The WA1210 was affordable, with a design that stood out among all the chunky, brightly coloured watches of the time – a true product of the 90s. Our favourite colours are the blue, and the yellow dial. So, we’re thrilled to be offering a blue dial version here.
What made the WA1210 so irresistible back then was its bold design and sheer audacity. It wasn’t subtle. It was loud. It was brash. It didn’t have that traditional "luxury watch" vibe – it had a “racing driver" energy. You weren’t just wearing a watch; you were wearing the feeling of going 200 km/h on a racetrack.
The quartz movement in the WA1210 wasn’t anything special, but it didn’t need to be. This wasn’t a watch for precision-obsessed collectors, it was a watch for people who liked to have a bit of fun. It’s the kind of watch that looks cool and keeps the time, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. And that’s what makes it such a fantastic piece – it’s low-key, playful, and just *cool*. It’s not looking to compete with the high-end luxury watches, and frankly, it doesn’t care. It’s the watch equivalent of a Sunday afternoon joyride. Like a 1980s and 1990s version of the Moonswatch.
Wearing a WA1210 now, it’s still just as fun as it was back then. Sure, the plastic might feel a bit retro (because nowadays they call it bioceramic), but it still has that "I don’t need to impress anyone" charm. And for a watch that was made in an era of over-the-top design, that’s saying something. The rubber strap, the bright colours, the oversized crown – it’s all part of what made this watch such a hit in the 80s and 90s and still makes it a quirky, cool option today. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not, and that’s what makes it so lovable. It’s not about flaunting your wealth or flaunting your watch knowledge; it’s about having fun with your wristwear.
So, no, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 WA1210 isn’t some ultra-premium luxury watch. It’s not the kind of thing you’d wear to impress someone at a black-tie event. But it *is* the kind of watch you’d wear when you just want to have a bit of fun, when you want something that brings a bit of 90s flair to your wrist, and when you want a timepiece that *feels* as fast as it looks. So what if it's made of plastic? It's the ultimate reminder that sometimes, the coolest things don't need to be made of gold – just a little bit of cheeky plastic and some racing-inspired style will do just fine.
