Why we love this watch

Tudor Black Bay 41mm Reference 79230B

Produced from 2016, the Tudor Black Bay 41mm reference 79230B represents one of the most important milestones in the revival of Tudor’s modern identity. It retains the design language of the brand’s early Submariner lineage while introducing the in-house Calibre MT5602 movement that marked a major step toward technical independence. With its deep blue bezel insert, gilt-style dial printing, and robust steel construction, the 79230B combines vintage inspiration with modern execution, embodying Tudor’s approach to accessible, high-quality watchmaking.

Origins of the Black Bay Line

The Tudor Black Bay collection was first launched in 2012, drawing inspiration from the brand’s historic dive watches of the 1950s and 1960s, particularly the Submariner references 7922, 7924, and 7016. Tudor’s design team sought to reinterpret these classic elements rather than simply reproduce them. The resulting design incorporated hallmark features such as the oversized “Big Crown,” snowflake hands, domed crystal, and gilt dial details, establishing a clear connection between the modern Black Bay and Tudor’s vintage tool-watch heritage.

The initial model, the Black Bay 79220R, featured a burgundy bezel and used the ETA 2824 movement. It was followed by the 79220B with a blue bezel and the 79220N with a black bezel. Each variant captured a different aspect of Tudor’s history. By 2016, Tudor took a significant step forward by replacing the ETA movements with its own manufacture calibre, introducing the references 79230R, 79230N, and 79230B. The “B” designation signified the blue-bezel version.

The Role of the 79230B in Tudor’s Evolution

The introduction of the reference 79230B represented more than just a colour variation. It marked Tudor’s maturation into a brand with its own engineering and design language. The in-house Calibre MT5602 was the first movement developed entirely by Tudor, bringing chronometer certification, improved power reserve, and a more industrially robust construction.

At the same time, Tudor retained the vintage-inspired design cues that had driven the success of the original Black Bay. The 79230B thus balanced modern technical substance with design continuity, reinforcing Tudor’s growing position as a manufacturer capable of delivering both authenticity and innovation.

The 79230B quickly became one of the most recognisable models within the Black Bay range, often referred to by enthusiasts as the “Blue Bay.” Its distinctive navy bezel, gilt accents, and strong wrist presence made it a cornerstone of Tudor’s modern catalogue.

Case and Construction

The Black Bay 79230B features a stainless steel case measuring 41mm in diameter, 14.8mm in thickness, and 50mm lug-to-lug. It follows the traditional proportions of mid-20th-century dive watches while integrating modern construction standards. The polished and satin finishes give the case a refined yet functional appearance.

The unidirectional rotating bezel features an anodised aluminium insert in matte navy blue, graduated with silver numerals for the first fifteen minutes and markings at every ten thereafter. The colour tone is subdued, appearing almost black in low light and deep navy under bright conditions. The insert’s matte finish echoes the anodised aluminium bezels found on vintage Tudor and Rolex dive watches.

The case is equipped with a large 8mm screw-down crown engraved with the Tudor rose emblem. The crown tube is anodised in blue, matching the bezel and providing subtle contrast against the steel case. The lugs feature brushed surfaces with polished chamfers, a detail that underscores Tudor’s careful attention to finishing.

Water resistance is rated to 200 metres (660 feet), consistent with professional diving standards. The caseback is solid steel, engraved with “TUDOR GENEVE CALIBRE MANUFACTURE.” Unlike some contemporary dive watches, the Black Bay 79230B forgoes crown guards, a nod to early Tudor Submariner models such as the reference 7922 from 1954.

Dial and Hands

The dial of the 79230B is matte black with gilt-style printing, giving it a warm tone under light. The gilt text includes the Tudor shield logo, the wordmark “GENEVE,” and the depth rating in contrasting white. This gilt treatment, combined with the creamy luminous hour markers, evokes the aesthetics of vintage Tudor references from the 1950s and 1960s.

Applied hour markers are filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova, offering strong legibility in low light. The markers include circular indices for most positions, rectangles at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, and a triangular marker at 12. The lume plots are enclosed by gilt surrounds, further enhancing the vintage character.

The hands are Tudor’s now-signature “snowflake” design, first introduced in the late 1960s for the brand’s military-issued dive watches. These hands were originally designed for maximum visibility underwater, and their inclusion here ties the 79230B to Tudor’s tool-watch heritage. The gilt-coloured hands contrast cleanly against the black dial, ensuring excellent readability.

The crystal is a domed sapphire, chosen to replicate the shape of vintage acrylic domes while providing modern scratch resistance. The overall effect is one of depth and warmth, characteristic of Tudor’s Black Bay line.

Movement: Calibre MT5602

The introduction of the Calibre MT5602 was a defining moment for Tudor. Developed entirely in-house, this automatic movement brought significant technical upgrades over the ETA 2824 that powered earlier Black Bay models. The MT5602 is a COSC-certified chronometer, ensuring accuracy between +4 and –6 seconds per day.

Technically, the movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and features a 70-hour power reserve, allowing the watch to run for nearly three days without winding. It uses a variable inertia balance wheel with a free-sprung silicon balance spring, offering enhanced resistance to shocks, magnetism, and temperature variations. The balance is secured by a full bridge, improving stability and serviceability.

The rotor is bidirectional and mounted on ball bearings, ensuring efficient winding. The finishing is functional rather than decorative, reflecting Tudor’s focus on durability. The bridges are sandblasted and laser-engraved, with a matte industrial aesthetic consistent with the brand’s utilitarian philosophy.

The MT5602 movement solidified Tudor’s reputation for technical independence, differentiating the Black Bay line from its earlier ETA-based predecessors and positioning the brand closer to its parent company, Rolex, in terms of engineering standards.

Bracelet and Straps

The 79230B was offered with three primary strap configurations: a stainless steel rivet-style bracelet, an aged leather strap, and a woven fabric NATO-style strap.

The rivet bracelet is one of the watch’s most distinctive features. Inspired by vintage Tudor bracelets from the 1950s and 1960s, it features solid links with rivet-style side detailing. The links taper from 22mm at the lugs to 18mm at the clasp, ensuring balanced weight distribution. The folding clasp includes a safety catch engraved with the Tudor shield logo. The bracelet combines vintage design cues with modern construction quality, contributing significantly to the watch’s character.

The leather strap option features a steel folding clasp and delivers a more casual aesthetic. It often comes in distressed brown leather, complementing the gilt tones of the dial. The third option, a woven NATO-style strap, is made in France by a traditional jacquard weaving workshop, reflecting Tudor’s commitment to craftsmanship even in its accessories.

Caseback and Water Resistance

The solid caseback of the 79230B is functional and understated, engraved with standard Tudor branding rather than decorative motifs. The watch maintains a depth rating of 200 metres, consistent with professional dive standards, achieved through the combination of a screw-down crown, reinforced seals, and a pressure-tested case design.

While the 79230B is not positioned as a professional diving instrument in the modern sense, its technical specifications easily meet the demands of recreational diving and underwater use. Its structure also ensures durability in everyday conditions, from travel to sports.

Wearing Experience

At 41mm, the Tudor Black Bay 79230B offers a strong wrist presence without overwhelming proportions. The thickness is substantial but balanced by the curvature of the lugs and the domed crystal, which help the watch sit comfortably. The combination of brushed surfaces and polished chamfers gives the case depth, while the blue bezel provides a subdued colour accent suitable for both casual and formal settings.

The weight distribution between the case and bracelet contributes to a stable and secure fit. Owners often note that the watch’s ergonomics reflect Tudor’s careful refinement of the case design since the first Black Bay release. Despite its vintage appearance, the 79230B feels distinctly modern in construction, exhibiting the precision and quality control expected of contemporary Swiss watchmaking.

Design Continuity with Tudor Heritage

The 79230B draws from several historical Tudor references, combining elements from different decades into a cohesive design. The oversized crown recalls the 1958 Tudor Submariner reference 7924, known as the “Big Crown.” The snowflake hands pay homage to the Submariner 7016 and 9401, which were issued to the French Navy in the 1970s. The gilt dial printing references Tudor’s earliest Submariners, while the blue bezel connects it to the 1970s “Snowflake” models with blue dials and bezels.

This fusion of details from different eras results in a watch that feels familiar yet contemporary. Rather than replicating a single vintage model, the 79230B represents an archival synthesis, paying respect to Tudor’s tool-watch heritage while incorporating advancements in materials and movement technology.

Market Reception and Significance

When the 79230B was introduced, it was widely recognised for its significance in Tudor’s transition from an ETA-based manufacturer to a brand capable of producing its own certified movements. Collectors appreciated that Tudor maintained accessible pricing while delivering substantial mechanical upgrades and higher-quality finishing.

The watch quickly became one of the most sought-after models in the Black Bay line. The blue bezel offered a distinct alternative to the burgundy and black versions, appealing to those who preferred a more subdued aesthetic. The introduction of the in-house movement also reassured long-term owners regarding service support and longevity.

Over time, the 79230B has remained a cornerstone of the modern Tudor collection. While later models introduced smaller sizes and updated designs, the 41mm Black Bay with its gilt dial and in-house movement continues to represent the foundation of Tudor’s success in the contemporary market.

Comparison with Adjacent References

Compared to the earlier reference 79220B, which featured the ETA 2824 movement, the 79230B delivers superior power reserve, magnetic resistance, and overall accuracy. The case profile remains similar, but subtle refinements in the crown tube and bezel construction contribute to improved durability.

When contrasted with later releases such as the Black Bay Fifty-Eight (reference 79030B), the 79230B appears larger and more robust. The Fifty-Eight, at 39mm and 11.9mm thick, was designed to appeal to collectors seeking vintage-sized proportions. The 79230B, by contrast, remains the archetypal modern Black Bay, offering greater presence and technical specification.

Within Tudor’s wider collection, the 79230B occupies a position between heritage authenticity and modern reliability. It retains the warmth of gilt details and hesalite-inspired crystal curvature while offering a fully contemporary in-house calibre.

Maintenance and Longevity

The MT5602 movement is designed for long-term serviceability. Its use of silicon components and full balance bridge construction contribute to stability and reduced wear. Tudor’s recommended service interval of approximately 10 years reflects the brand’s confidence in the movement’s durability.

The steel case and bracelet resist corrosion effectively, and the aluminium bezel insert can be replaced if damaged without compromising the watch’s integrity. Regular maintenance of gaskets ensures water resistance is maintained.

Collectors often note that the 79230B’s long-term value lies in its role as the first generation of Black Bays to feature an in-house movement, making it historically significant within Tudor’s modern timeline.

Final Thoughts

The Tudor Black Bay 41mm reference 79230B is a defining model in the brand’s modern era. It bridges the gap between Tudor’s vintage-inspired aesthetic and its contemporary technical capabilities. With its robust steel construction, gilt-accented dial, blue bezel insert, and COSC-certified Calibre MT5602, it represents the culmination of decades of gradual refinement in both design and engineering.

As part of the first generation of in-house Black Bays, the 79230B marked Tudor’s emergence as a fully independent manufacturer capable of producing its own certified movements while retaining the brand’s core values of durability and accessibility. The watch honours Tudor’s early Submariner heritage through details such as the snowflake hands and lack of crown guards, yet delivers modern performance suitable for daily wear.
